Why Is My Furnace Making Noises?

Types of Furnace Sounds to Listen For

The small silver lining of a furnace Noise is that there are a lot of them, and the vast majority of noises all coincide with a particular issue. This does mean you still have a problem, of course, but at least it’s one that is fairly simple to identify. Are you hearing:

  • Rattling noises? A consistent rattling noise will most commonly point to either a loose component, usually the fan assembly, or bearings that have gotten worn down. The problem is a fairly simple fix, but needs attention.
  • Metal grinding? A metal-on-metal sound is very jarring, and for good reason. This often means a component has loosened to the point of dangling or has broken off completely. You’ll want a repair professional right away to avoid a possible furnace replacement.
  • Gurgling, or trickling water sounds? Modern furnace systems tend to create a small measure of condensation as they operate. Normally this goes into the drain line and safely out of the home, but if the line is damaged or the drain pan is worn or cracked, you can encounter a furnace leak.
  • Squealing? High-pitched squealing will be a worn out or misaligned belt most of the time. As far as noises go this is one of the loudest, but actually one of the easiest and most cost-effective to repair. Don’t leave the problem, however, as the noise will only get worse, and if the belt breaks completely you’ll lose heating power until it is fixed.
  • Humming and buzzing? Humming or buzzing sounds will probably be an electrical issue. This needs immediate professional attention. Don’t attempt to interact with the furnace, and if possible to do so safely, it’s best to cut power to the furnace at your control panel completely.
  • Clicking sounds? These may and or may not be accompanied by a deep rumbling sound when your gas furnace kicks on. The problem is typically dirty burners or a gas valve that has been neglected for too long. To avoid this one always be sure to pursue annual furnace maintenance!
