Salvador Sobral is Recovering

Portugal’s Eurovision winner Salvador Sobral underwent a heart transplant in late 2017 at the Santa Cruz Hospital in the capital of Portugal, Lisbon. The 27-year old singer had been suffering from a debilitating heart condition for several years of his life and spent several months on a donor list waiting for a suitable heart donor to be found.

A Successful Surgery

As reported by the Portuguese publication Publico Daily, Sobral’s surgeon Miguel Abecasis said that the surgery was a resounding success. Dr Abecasis stated that part of the reason behind this was that the singer was very well prepared for the operation and had complete knowledge and understanding of all potential difficulties of the type of procedure he was about to undergo. While the surgery was of a serious nature and Sobral has a long recovery time ahead of him, he will eventually be able to lead an entirely normal life. The heart surgeon also said that Sobral had wished him best of luck with the operation on the day it was scheduled.

A National Hero in Portugal

Salvador Sobral became known in 2017 as the first Portuguese national to take the Eurovision title. He won the contest with his love song named Amar Pelos Dois (Love for us Both). The song is a ballad written by Sobral’s older sister Luisa and was described as being an emotion-filled song that is harmonious and carries a beautiful and lyrical message. Sobral described it as the kind of song people are no longer used to listening to. After winning the contest and becoming one of Portugal’s national heroes, Sobral enjoyed his time in the limelight until he was forced to take a hiatus due to ill health. In September he announced that he was taking a break from performing and in early December Sobral received the transplant.
