Different Types of Fire Apparatus

Hey guys! In this post I got some pictures to help explain some common questions. Most people mistake Fire engines and fire trucks for each other, but contrary to common belief there is a difference. I will post below what each specific Apparatus has and what makes each one important. All the apparatus's have general equipment but these Main Components are what make each apparatus.

Fire Engine
A engine has four Main Components to it.
  • Hose (1/2 Inch - 6 Inches Diameter)
  • Water Tank (Holds Between 250-2000 Gallons)
  • Water Pump
  • Ground Ladders (Up to 28 FT)

Fire TruckA fire truck has three main components to it.
  • Aerial Ladders (Up to 100 ft)
  • Ground Ladders (Up to 50 ft)
  • Specialized Tools (Vehicle Extrication Tools, Ventilation Fans etc etc)

Light & Air / Utility Unit (Squad)The Squad is made up of many different components. Their ability to supply electrical power and lighting makes them useful at incident scenes or to support emergency control centers, base camps, temporary evacuation shelters, medical facilities and other key installations. They can be used for many more things too, like this unit above is also a urban search and rescue and confined space unit.

Rescue (Ambulance)A rescue is used to transport sick
and injured people to the hospital.

Battalion ChiefThe battalion chief unit is used for incident command. Anytime there is over three apparatus required at a scene a battalion chief is also sent to keep the scene organized. The battalion chief stays at his unit while verbally directing on the radio what to do.
