The Complete Process of Asphalt Paving In Toronto | 6 STEPS

What is The Paving Process?

Asphalt paving means paving road surface with Asphalt aggregate. Asphalt provides quite, smooth, resilient surface and is one of the most versatile pavement materials used in modern construction. Its Pavement structures are designed to handle any load from passenger cars to heavy lorry. Whether it is parking lots, roadways or airways, pavements made from asphalt add up the best value for people, with lowest life cycle cost.

Asphalt pavements are well known for their pliancy. It is this strength which makes them the best option for almost all paved surfaces. Many state and governments prefer these pavements because of their reliability and long life. If properly laid then it does not need replacement for about 20 to 25 years.

Asphalt paving material consists of stone, sand, and liquid asphalt. Liquid asphalt which is a black sticky substance, used as binding material in asphalt pavements. It is quite viscous in nature and can also be found in semi solid forms. The main advantage of asphalt is 70 to 80% materials are recyclable.

At main infrastructure, we use the best asphalt paving techniques and top materials to enhance surface performance and lifespan.

Asphalt pavements are fast to construct. As asphalt effectively needs no “cure” time, commuters can use roadways as soon as the roller leaves the construction zone. This means fewer delays and safer road for travelers.

You will find that it makes for an extremely durable, non-skid surface. It is designed to extend the life of existing pavement by protecting the under surface from the effects of oxidation, weather and water seepage. We use asphalt aggregate on both new and old pavements, and both provides same result.

Following are the techniques used to pave asphalt pavement:

#STEP 1: Removing the Existing Surface

The very first step of asphalt paving is to remove the existing surface, whether it is for concrete or asphalt. Usually old asphalt materials are recycled in order to reuse it. The 80% of asphalt materials are recyclable and can be reuse that makes asphalt nature friendly & less hazardous. Removal of existing asphalt may require heavy machinery such as bobcats, front ladders, dump trucks and forklifts.

#STEP 2: Sloping and Grading

For proper installation of asphalt, proper drainage is essential for asphalt surface. Grading and sloping process help to create an asphalt surface that boast excellent water drainage.  As we know that water is the major reason of damage to asphalt causing potholes. We use proper method to drain all the water before paving. Proper water draining is important for pavements, otherwise it will cause trouble in future.

#STEP 3: Preparing Asphalt

As it is known that asphalt is a blend of stone, sand, gravel and hot asphalt cement. Black-top concrete is an oil-based item. The blend is warmed to 300 degrees Fahrenheit and is spread when hot, so it is always advised to hire experienced workers do your asphalt paving to shield the asphalt from cooling in travel. Aggregate cools rapidly once spread so it can be driven on not long after clearing is finished.

#STEP 4: Laying of Asphalt

When loading the mix into the receiving hopper, the haul truck is placed carefully in front of the paver. The rear wheels of the truck should be in contact with the truck roller of the paver to avoid any misalignment with the paver. The paver will push the truck forwards as it paves the road. If skewness happens, the whole process will be delayed because they have to re position the truck in front of the paver.

#STEP 5: Testing uniformity of asphalt

As soon as the first load of asphalt mix has been spread, the uniformity of the asphalt texture should be check. Any segregation of materials should not be allowed. Operation should be stopped immediately if any segregation is detected. The operators should also be aware of crown control. Pavement with crown has to be redone all over again. In addition to that, operators should continuously loosen the mix that clings to the sides of the hopper and push it back into the active mix. If the asphalt mix grow cold, it cannot be properly compacted and thus, loose its strength.

#STEP 6: Compaction

Compacting is very important step in your surface paving process. Without proper compaction, the asphalt surface will not hold together and endure season after season.

There are several roller combinations used to maximize results:

  • Steel-tired static
  • Vibratory and steel-tired static rollers
  • Vibratory rollers used in vibrating and static modes.
