How to Sleep Your Way to The Top

Somewhere between the Tim Ferris unicorn fantasy of the 4-Hour Work Week and the currently popular message from Gary Vaynerchuk that you need to “grind” through a grueling work schedule day-after-day and week-after-week… there’s a happy medium that truly works to drive success in normal people.

Many of these concepts have been covered in excruciating detail so today I simply want to give you a few specific things that you can do right now to improve your creativity and problem-solving capability to put you at the top of your game.

In today’s hyper-connected world, information is the key to credibility and success. The people that have the information and Knowledge thrive while the others without the knowledge starve their progress, stagnate and eventually die off.

But there’s more to success than having the knowledge. Plenty of really smart people are under achieving every single day.

While possessing knowledge is important, demonstrating this knowledge is far more important to your success. It’s like a secret that you can’t tell anyone; containing the secret brings no benefit to you which is why most people are horrible at keeping secrets “secret”.

To receive a benefit from your knowledge, you need to be able to demonstrate this knowledge in a way that lets people know you have the knowledge.

Leading by example, actually applying knowledge in a real-world fashion, is great but not really practical when dealing with large numbers of people.

It always comes down to mass communication, via mass media, which is why you see so many industry experts looking for ways to reach large crowds with their message and demonstration of their knowledge.

Statistically proven, people place a higher degree of credibility on things written than things spoken verbally. To convince someone of something, anything really, your best option is to put it in writing.

This isn’t to say that you can’t also deliver the same message via public speaking, or video, but it’s why so many “experts” now Write a book to establish their credibility. Not to mention articles in LinkedIn and other professional venues.

The trouble for most people, maybe you, is coming up with ideas to write about and here’s where my simple advice will solve that problem.

Sleep in tomorrow!

Don’t set an alarm clock and when you wake up, don’t get out of bed.

Just lie in bed and let your mind work on its own. Think about topics you’d like to pursue and when one pops into your head (it will), then get out of bed and immediately write it down.

Once you have the topic written down, go straight to a computer with no other work items connected, in a quiet place in your home, and write about your topic. Never look at your phone, email, news, etc… nothing to pollute your mind from the topic at hand.

I guarantee this simple process will make it easier for you to crank out unlimited written pieces than anything else you’ve tried before. No tricks or gimmicks and no “grinding” to the wee hours of the night. “Grinding” all night just makes your brain tired and will sap your ability to come up with topics to write about… plus, you actually have a life to live before you die.

Also, it’s critical that you do not consume alcohol – sorry, but this will affect your sleep patterns and kill off the idea creation process.

Give this simple process a try and let me know how it works for you.

PS And remember, this is coming from an “expert” on the topic, proven by the fact that this is written down.
