4 Uses of Modular Medical Facilities in a Growing Industry

Healthcare is one of the fastest growing industries in the world, and according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, is projected to grow up to 18 percent by the year 2026. This number would add roughly 2.4 million new healthcare jobs; and with new jobs, creates a need for more medical Facilities.

Several factors contribute to the need for more healthcare facilities, but the main reasons perhaps would be due to the continued growth in population. Each decade, the U.S. population grows by 25 million people. And because of the medical advancements in healthcare and technology, Americans are living longer and requiring increased treatment for physician visits, specialized care, cancer treatments, or geriatric care.

Specialized Care Centers

According to the National Academy of Sciences, a significant factor to the boom in healthcare is due to the technological medical advances. As individual doctors study a specific area of disease, illness, or surgical procedures, patients create a demand for this specialized care.

Specialized care centers can range from a variety of programs or services for senior citizens. Some clinics may treat patients with Alzheimer’s or Dementia, whereas another clinic may treat patients who suffer from respiratory or pulmonary conditions. Other types of specialized care facilities may treat patients who need help with the day-to-day management of their diabetes.

The options for specialized care centers are endless, but they offer their patients everything from personalized care plans, rehabilitation, education, lifestyle modification, tests, therapy, and other patient-focused services.

Rehabilitation Centers

Rehabilitation is a term that covers a variety of services or needs. Its primary purpose is intended to help patients get back on their feet to improve daily life after certain functioning skills have been lost or impaired, due to illness or injury.

Rehabilitation centers typically range from physical therapy, speech therapy, surgical recovery, or other emotional, psychological, and physical impairments. Typically, a rehabilitation center will be an out-patient facility, but other in-patient therapies are offered in units of hospitals, nursing facilities, or ambulatory centers.

According to IBISWorld market research, physical therapy rehabilitation centers experienced significant growth in recent years. This can be contributed to the number of adults aged 65 and older, as well as steady progress in economic recovery. This industry is expected to continue to rise, and forecasts predict that the industry will bring in revenue of $35 billion, as well as an annual growth of 3.6 percent over the next five years.

As the need for rehabilitation centers continue to rise, many hospitals are opening off-site specialized clinics that can focus on the patient’s rehabilitation needs, which in turn creates less congestion in the hospital and provides ample space for doctors, staff, and patients.

Behavioral Health Facilities

Behavioral health treatment facilities are becoming increasingly prevalent in America. According to Psychology Today, the terms “behavioral health” and “mental health” are sometimes used interchangeably, and lumped together under human services- however behavioral health is a preventative measure intended to intervene with substance abuse, addiction, or other mental disorders in patients.

Mental health can include illness such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, trauma, or other psychological concerns- but it is behavioral health that aims to promote well-being by preventing these mental illnesses to negatively affect a patient’s life.

If untreated, mental health disorders can have a devastating impact on a person’s life. Employment, financial status, relationships, and overall quality of life are drastically affected by mental health. In recent years, the stigma of mental health has been lifted and more patients are feeling comfortable to talk about their concerns, and to seek treatment.

In fact, opioid abuse addiction has become such an epidemic of recent years that even colleges and universities are beginning to open on-campus rehabilitation clinics to students. These campuses are creating a safe space for students to seek medical help, counseling, or even to serve as a sanctuary where students can come to not be distracted by their temptations.

Just this year, Carolina Partners in Mental Healthcare (CPMH) decided to grow its behavioral health clinics across North Carolina and beyond due to the increased demand in mental health care. CPMH provides out-patient mental and behavioral healthcare services, and has decided to expand their growth due to the increased demand by patients for higher quality services (Behavioral Healthcare Executive).

Urgent Care Facilities

A growing industry that has optimized the healthcare delivery experience is urgent care. In the past, if a patient needed to see a doctor after business hours or in an emergency situation, they would have to go to their local hospital and wait in the ER. Sometimes, patients who needed assistance for something minor like asthma, bronchitis, fever, or other ailment would sit and wait for extended periods of time while ER doctors were caring for patients who were in more critical conditions.

Today however, urgent care facilities are providing round-the-clock care to patients at local facilities throughout both rural and urban communities. It is an $18 billion industry which is expected to grow nearly 6 percent by the end of this year (Forbes).

Urgent care facilities handle about 89 million patient visits per year.  That number is expected to grow as patients create a demand due to the industry’s convenience and costs. Many insurance providers have affordable co-pay for urgent care facilities, which makes a trip to the doctor much more affordable than an ER bill. The urgent care industry isn’t only booming because of costs. Patients who are seeking medical care do not want to wait, and at an urgent care facility patients do not need an appointment and there is little-to-no wait time on a typical day.

Modular Medical Facilities

Healthcare administrators are always searching for space solutions to provide specialized medical care to patients. By building modules off site, a modular medical facility may be up and running in half the time that it would take to build a healthcare facility with traditional construction methods. Modular buildings also provide temporary space during lengthy renovations or new building construction projects.

Modular construction accelerates the building time and minimizes site disruption for staff and patients. As satellite clinics become increasingly popular, and existing facilities continue to expand, modular construction has become a trusted provider in high-quality medical facilities.
