Fresh Produce Packaging

Packaging for fresh Produce can be tricky to get the right level of protection for transport and extending shelf life, while not over Packaging the product to infuriate customers and retailers who are currently pushing for the reduction of packaging due to environmental issues and recycling issues throughout the UK.

One option is to move away from single use plastic wraps on fruit & veg products such as cabbages, cauliflower, bananas etc and just transport and sell from the shelf in a carboard fruit box. This makes the packaging recyclable and reusable while being stackable allows for the products to naturally breath.

Plastic trays used to hold fresh meat products can also be replaced with a corrugated board replacement, although it would still be required to be shrink wrapped, this would reduce the amount of plastic packaging used, which is the currently the main issue due to China’s ban on taking our plastic waste and our landfills not able to cope with the rate of non-degradable packaging products.

Heavy duty pallet and dolav boxes can be used to transport bulk fresh produce to distributors or processing facilities. Shipping in these types of packaging products allows for the minimum amount of packaging to be used compared to the amount of produce.

By using corrugated packaging options for fresh produce it’s a cost effective, environmentally friendly and sustainable way to protect, store and transport products while protecting the items and reducing landfill issues.
