A View From Over the Pond: Outside Looking In

During the last 14 months since Donald Trump, reality TV personality and so-called businessman, became the president of the USA, we in the world outside of the USA have spent a lot of time looking at what’s been going on in America and shaking our collective heads in disbelief. The antics of President Trump, his cabinet and related sycophants like Kellyanne Conway have left the outside world in a state of disbelief. From the very first utterance of then new press secretary, Sean Spicer, concerning the size of the inauguration crowd, to the latest Stormy in a porn teacup it’s pretty clear America is going a little crazy. So what do we, the non-American people of the world, do, if anything, about this craziness? After all, Trump may be an American problem, but what he and his administration does can have a direct affect on many lives outside of the United States. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot we can do, except express concern and sympathy with our American cousins.

It’s hard enough watching the craziness from afar but I’ll bet it’s even harder being in the middle of a daily round of lies, deceit and downright exploitation of the long-suffering American people.

From an early age I’ve watched American politics from my home in England and since I moved to Cyprus ten years ago I’ve continued to watch events unfold. American politics made British politics look staid and stuffy. But all that changed with Brexit and the murder of British MP (Member of Parliament) Jo Cox. Then followed the news that Donald Trump had been elected President of the United States of America. Say what? This earth shattering news arrived in my inbox via the BBC and I was gobsmacked, as were a lot of Americans. The American people had voted in a con-artist, a man who had spent years attempting to fleece Americans and now he was soon to be the most powerful man in the world. “Are you crazy America?” was my very first thought. I still think that and that thought has cropped up as I’ve nightly, yes nightly, watched the news coming in via the likes of Rachel Maddow, Ari Melber and Lawrence O’Donnel at MSNBC and of course Jake Tapper at CNN.

Without doubt, the election of Donald J. Trump to the presidency and the vote by the British people to leave the EU has changed my life in a significant manner and probably many of my contemporaries. I now have a much broader view of the world and how other people’s madness can affect someone living on the other side of the world. On the one hand the Trump vote was an appalling thing to happen but on the other, with Brexit, there may be a little hope that Britain can become a world leader in common sense with Theresa May in charge. Who knows?

What is almost certainly going to happen is that Trump’s presidency will crash and burn, sooner rather than later with Mueller now going into top gear. But that’s not before Trump and his gang have done their best to enrich themselves at the expense of the American people and at the same time embarrass the American people in the eyes of the world, as we all watch the once respected office of the President of the United States being turned into a reality TV show.
