Website Design: Is Your Website Open for Business?

Do you get a lot of visits (sometimes called traffic) to your website? If the answer to that is yes or no, read on.

No you don’t get traffic on your website

Why do you suppose that is? Is it that nobody likes you or that nobody knows about your website, or that you prefer to remain anonymous. I suspect it’s because nobody knows your website exists. If that’s the case then there are probably three reasons for this lack of traffic. Your SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is no good. Your website isn’t indexed by Google, or Bing. You are not actively promoting your website.

If none of the above makes any sense to you, then you need a helping hand from your host or your webmaster. A website with no visitors is a waste of time, money and effort.

Yes you do get traffic on your website

If you get the traffic you want to your website then you’re doing fine… or are you? Do you know how long the average person stays on your website? Do you know the bounce rate – that’s the percentage of people landing on your home page and jumping straight back out again. Do you know where in the world your traffic comes from and do you know what visitors are looking at?

If none of the above makes any sense to you, then even you, with lots of traffic, need a helping hand from your host or your webmaster. A website with no statistics is also a waste of time, money and effort. If you don’t know what people like, how can you plan for the future?

Your website is a shop window

Designing a website is one thing, but ensuring that website is SEO compliant and indexed by the major search engines is an absolute must, or your website will never be discovered.

So, do what you need to do and then sit back on your laurels… well, actually, no. A website is much the same as a new baby. You will continually need to change and add to your content and you will continually need to promote your website. To paraphrase an old advert: A website isn’t just for Christmas, it’s for life.
