Living in Cyprus: On the Grapevine

Rather than hearing anything on my grapevine, I’ve actually seen something for the very first time – grapes growing! It may not seem like a big deal to you, but to me it’s massive. I’ve finally managed to grow Fruit other than oranges and lemons.

Okay, it’s fruit, so what? Well, for someone who grew up helping his parents grow fruit and veg on a small allotment (think of a very, very small-holding) it’s been a dream of mine to own my own grapevines. My second dream was having a grapevine climbing a trellis to cover an outside gazebo and be able to have the family round enjoying eating a barbecue and at the end pull a few grapes off and pass them round. So, to finally getting the beginnings of a vine doing what it’s supposed to do, climbing and producing bunches of grapes, it’s a short hop to fulfilling the second part of the dream. I’ve only been at this game nine years, so it’s been a bit of a wait.

A bonus to this is also getting a nectarine (type of hairless peach) not only grow (the last three died) but Produce Fruit as well. And it’s producing fruit like it’s going out of fashion.

Of course my mainstay to this hobby is oranges and lemons.

Oranges we have in plenty. About nine trees and one lemon tree, The lemon and two oranges now produce fruit on a regular basis. So we’re getting to be self-sufficient in fruit.

It’s a great pity my wife doesn’t like to eat fruit too often… but then, there’s more for me at the end of the day.

A Pat on his Back

5.0 out of 5 stars

A humorous and interesting tale of a British expats struggle to make a new life in Cyprus.
By Ken Coston
If you want to forget your troubles for an hour or two while living through the humorous exploits of someone else’s misfortunes then this is the book for you. I chuckled in some places, worried in some places and was sad in others. Overall, it’s a fun read and well worth the very low cover price. Tom Kane has a style of writing that is very endearing.
