My Indie Film Experience Begins

In case you haven’t Heard, I began working as an Assistant Screenwriter on an independent Film this January. I won’t rehash the details. However, if you hadn’t heard, you can read my piece in The Huffington Post, titled “Love Is Love: Why I Decided to Work on an Indie Film”.

Last week, all of the writers on the film were allowed to dive right into what had already been written and come up with our own ideas. This was very interesting for me, especially since I’d never actually written a screenplay before. But I wasn’t intimidated by it at all. I’ve always considered myself a storyteller and to me film is just a different form of storytelling. And since I write as if a movie were taking playing in my head, it came natural to me.

I didn’t have all of the terminology down, but I dove face-first into it. I just tapped out the description of the film playing in my head. Next to me, was a cup of coffee and a small bowl of Flamin’ Hot Limon Crunchy Cheetos. I wonder. Is this what all screenwriters eat as they work?

It wasn’t long after I’d completed a couple of pages before a thought popped into my heard:

Man! You’re actually working on a screenplay for a real movie!

I can’t share the actual details of the story, except that it’s a love story. However, I can already see this experience is exactly as I believed from the beginning: The right project at a time when I really needed it.

Stay tuned as I share what details I can about this amazing experience as an assistant screenwriter on an Indie Film.

By the way, I’m also over 30,000 words in the novel I started in December 2013, and just over 2,000 in another one I started in the same month. This year is shaping up to be a lot better that the last ended. It just goes to show you, don’t give up because you never know what surprises await you just around the bend.
