Sexually Explicit

Many people will read Sexually Explicit and won't read further. Some might, secretly or openly. A growing kind are the ones outraged just looking at someone looking at these words!

One of my friend considers talking about sex, not the verb but even the noun, as outrageous. This one time he was explaining the procedure of filling out a bank form. "First write your name, then address, then the pin code and don't forget to mention whether you are a male or a female." He simply won't say 'Sex'. That was too Sexually explicit for him.

Proof that people like him exist aplenty - try voicing the word in any crowded bank branch across this country. The mere mention of the word draws fleeting but definitely uneasy glances from listeners. As if you just spit on someone.

Talking of spit, DNA samples from saliva of at least 10 guys were collected from a crime scene. The scene with full sensitivity I state, not surprisingly was, the body of a teenage girl. Too sexually explicit?

Most like me will snigger at my friend and never associate with the latter guys because our comfort with what is sexually explicit lies somewhere in between.

But this 'somewhere in between' is a huge minefield of sexuality, cultures, ages, races, regions, religions, political leanings, education levels, fears, controls, opportunities, exposures, ideas and hypocrisies. We all tread this field ready to explode at different points because, we all have our date with the sexually explicit.

One of my experiences made me think hard on the subject.

Sometime last year I was invited to witness a panel discussion for trainee teachers in a neighbouring college. I had been a regular there for coffee with my neighbour, the owner of the institute. So I happened to know many of the trainees quite well. Colleges have spawned in residential neighbourhoods in my city like mould grows on bread. Consumerism, demand and supply, capital investment, emerging nation, call it whatever. My building contractor neighbour had simply switched professions as education sector provided better returns.

Anyway, the topic of discussion was, 'Is Donald Trump's Character Worthy of a President?'. Someone had come up with an article on Donald Trump's character and behaviour, serving as fodder for organizers thousands of kilometres away to test soon-to-be educators. Additionally, the security with fast depleting, offense-free topic in my country, has an unparalleled relief.

"How outrageous these Americans? They deserve this President, with all his lady friends, vulgar friends and prostitutes, multiple wives, sexually explicit remarks," one participant growled with an air of virtuosity no holy man could have exhibited (if they exist).

This noble, aspirant teacher had brokered a child marriage in his village that same week. Now here he was analyzing Trump's escapades. But none will ever know the sexually explicit details of the 14 year old girl's post marriage trauma. Last heard, she was forced, read-convinced, to go back to her husband after she had complained of sexually explicit brutalities. Routine-sexually explicit.

Still someone suggested with an air of intelligence, "Look, I may have my reservations about the man but what he does in his private life, his bisexual orientation, is not my business and neither should it be for others." "His bedroom or his affairs are only his problem."

This fellow was the first to report the sighting of his neighbour's girl with a boy in a coffee house. A sexually explicit detail for her parents; something so inconvenient that every neighbour like him ought to discuss. No sexually explicit detail in my country's neighbourhood has a greater orgasmic value than spotting a neighbour or a relative crossing the notional line.

The even more intelligent participant went, "I think the word you are looking for is pansexual. Bisexual deals in binaries like computers, men or women. I think he is open to even the third possibility which means he is pan-sexual, or if another category opens up even that." "What we term sexually explicit is only a state of mind, not performance at work." I saw beaming organizers and staff; future of our country lies in responsible hands, kind of expressions all around.

This responsible figure had picketed in front of a police station because her husband had been interrogated by the police for 'just trying' himself on his niece against her will. After all, passports, visas, impending Dubai trip and family name were all in jeopardy. Compromise worthy sexually explicit!

The remaining participants were as follows-

  • husband got an off day so she had to leave before the discussion even began
  • three of them didn't know the terms sexually explicit or Donald Trump
  • father denied permission to participate in a filthy discussion- "to hell with training, let's go."

After the session, I was asked for comments by my neighbour. I almost started, "The topic was not Trump's sex life or..."

But then I thought better and managed, "Good."

Is my time and place in history unfortunate when it comes to sexually explicit?
