REVIEW

J.R.R. Tolkien, J. K. Rowling and now we have Matia ben Ephraim!! April 12, 2017

Whatever flaws we might identify or frustrations we might feel are trivial in comparison to a reader’s pure joy in losing himself/herself in a narrative. When all the elements come together: an intriguing plot, thoughtful, profound themes, complex, troubling, characters, and language that make us shudder for its honesty, clarity, and confidence; we gratefully set all analysis aside and give ourselves up to the sheer magic of a great Book. And for me, The Wizard of Kharathad is such a book.

The story had every element a good story should have. An exciting plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well illustrated scenes that really make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that’s something I really look for in a good book.

The book description says it all; ‘Raised on a farmstead situated a few miles outside the town of Kharathad, Dogalas was a young man solid and true, just like all Kharathidian men were brought up to be. It was a common practice that lads between sixteen and eighteen springs of age would go to train under the wise Wizard of the Tower, in order to become semizards; men who would travel the world for a year on their Journey, helping others and gaining fame through use of their magical abilities – until they would gain the zardor and become true wizards, to settle in a town of their own and train new semizards in their place. Dogalas, forever curious as to the detailed workings of magic, intended to follow in their footsteps and find out for himself what it meant to be a semizard. Little did he know the perils that awaited him on his path, the secrets that abounded in his own past…and the hidden destiny of his future. Enter a world of mystery and magic, replete with incredible creatures (from gnomes to dragons and beyond), enchanting characters, diverse locations, and unlock the door to the magic within with The Wizard of Kharathad…’

This captivating and commendable work had me immersed from the beginning. The story flows from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional skill when it comes to storytelling.  There are attention-grabbing moments in this page turner that will take the reader on a spellbinding journey! It should be noted that this is not a fast paced fantasy tale. It has almost 800 pages, consequently making this quite a meaty read. What’s even more astonishing is that it was authored by a 17-year-old!

It’s one of those stories that come along once in awhile that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader!

I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading more from Matia ben Ephraim in the future. I would definitely recommend this book. Five stars from me.
