Michael Connelly's rough around the edges, get the job done, leading-man returns in the 21st installment of this wildly popular series, entitled The Wrong Side of Goodbye. There's something here for everyone to enjoy. Suspense, mystery, scenery...oh, and half-brother Mickey Haller does a lot more than a cameo.

Still stinging from the LAPD's decision to force him into early retirement, Harry Bosch isn't going to give up police work just yet. He takes a volunteer position with the San Fernando Police Department working cold cases. In addition to which he does private investigative work. You won't find him in the phone book or see his smiling face painted on the side of a bus...he doesn't advertise. He relies on word of mouth references.

Bosch is summoned to the Pasadena estate of industrial tycoon Whitney Vance. The eighty-five-year-old recluse wanted to hire him to find someone that may or may not even exist. Vance explained that in 1950 he was in love with a Mexican girl named Vibiana. She was pregnant when she disappeared from his life six decades ago. The elderly man was in poor health and had no 'known' heirs. He wanted to know if Vibiana had given birth to his child. He had to know before it was too late.

Back at the SFPD Bosch was trying to piece together multiple rape cases. Dubbed the "Screen Cutter" for his means of entry. Thank goodness this point of his modus operandi became his nickname and not the other. This offender was growing more brazen and more dangerous with each attack. He had to be stopped.

These two very different cases are worked and subsequently resolved the good old fashioned way. And boy oh boy is it good! This quite possibly could be the best Bosch book yet. Titus Welliver utilizes inflections, tones, voice "quirks and mannerisms" to tell Connelly's story so well even the most devoted print reader just might be converted. It is rich with emotion and you can't help but get wrapped up in it. Harry Bosch is a good guy, a top notch investigator and a heck-of-a-lot of fun to spend a weekend with!

Happy Listening,

RJ
