Fashion rules you should ditch right now

Times change, and with changing times changes Fashion trends. Barring the few set rules about what to wear and how to wear, today fashion rules are pretty relaxed. That’s what rules are all about– they either change or are broken.

Below are a few such rules that have outlived their usefulness and become redundant. If you still follow them, it’s time to ditch them right now.

Black and navy are the best for office

While black and navy are indeed safe choices for those afraid to experiment or are just starting out, they aren’t the only colours you can wear to work, now that so many other colours are available. Colours like grey and tan work just as well to create a lasting impression.

Different patterns shouldn’t be mixed

Traditionalists will still tell you patterns shouldn’t be mixed, and while it’s true for fashion novices, if you’re a pro at patterns, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t. There are multitudes of patterns available now, from small to big, from subtle to vibrant. But the most important thing to remember when mixing patterns is to stick to the same colour rather than mix different colours. It’s also easier to get the outfit right if you mix small patterns with big.

No denim on denim

Although the trend of Denim on denim has come and gone over the years, of late it’s one of the coolest fashion statements around. There is a wide variety of denim shades, and to add interest to your look, mix and match different shades to avoid looking bland. Whether you’re wearing a denim jacket or denim shirt with your jeans, make sure it’s well-fitted. Your jeans also should fit you right– nothing too loose or too tight.

Belt and shoes must match

This is generally still true. The colour and texture of your belt and shoes must match. But of late the rule has relaxed a lot. It’s perfectly okay to have different belt and shoes, as long as they coordinate well.

Joggers are meant for the gym

This couldn’t be farther than the truth these days. With everybody opting for athleisure, it’s now commonplace to find people wearing sports staples to casual places. Athleisure should be done carefully and with taste; the colours should be neutral, there should be little to no branding, and the fit should be as close as possible.

Avoid white socks

It’s true that white socks can be hard to pair with different kinds of outfits, and particularly with a suit, but they are ideal for casual wear. If you want to add some interest to your casual outfit, pair white socks with canvas shoes and rolled or cropped denim to make your ensemble pop.

Fashion rules are there to make it easy for you to dress. If you’re a confident dresser who knows what works and what doesn’t feel free to play with the rules and break them!
