A guide to dressing semi-formal

If there’s one Dress Code that’s utterly confusing, it’s semi-formal. Men always find themselves in a bind when they have to dress for an occasion that’s neither formal nor casual. When you don’t understand semi-formal wear, you either turn up overdressed or underdressed, and neither is a desirable situation.

Don’t worry. Semi-formal dress code for men isn’t as complicated as it seems. It is simply a middle ground between formal and casual and is a chosen dress code for dinner parties and weddings. Don’t be fooled by the confusing term, though. Semi-formal is still a dress code, and turning up underdressed isn’t an option.

A nice Suit, with or without a tie, is a good place to begin. Keep the colour subtle, and make sure to go for a sleek leather belt and leather shoes. Your outfit needs to be traditional, your accessories understated, and shoes formal.

Still confused? Then here’s a list of tips you may follow to nail your semi-formal look.

1. Avoid the tuxedo

The tuxedo, or dinner jacket, is strictly for formal occasions or black-tie events. Semi-formally is more relaxed than formal, and wearing a tuxedo to such an event is a social faux pas. A suit is a better option since it goes for both formal and semi-formal events. In the case of any confusion, it is always better to check with the host.

2. Wear a suit

You can never go wrong with a suit at a Semiformal occasion. You must always wear a jacket or coat to such an event, and that makes a suit your best bet. To look your best in a suit, have one tailored to fit you perfectly.

When choosing a suit for a semi-formal event, you have to make sure that it meets all the formal requirements yet not look too dressy. Keep the colour palette muted for daytime events and choose dark colours for events in the evening or night. You can also add a tie if you want, even though it isn’t always required.

3. Never underdress

The biggest mistake men make is turn up underdressed at a semi-formal event. You cannot wear a polo shirt or khakis and jeans to an event that’s strictly semi-formal. You may not wear a tie or a dress shirt, but you must wear suit pants and a blazer, and keep your shoes on the formal side. Avoid sports coats as well, since they are better suited for outdoor afternoon events.

Daytime semi-formal events call for lighter coloured clothing, while the ones after sundown require darker clothing. Pair the dark suit with lighter shirts and a contrast tie to make a nice outfit. You can also wear pastel coloured suits, but keep them only for daytime events.

Semi-formal dress code isn’t difficult. When you learn to strike the balance between formal and relaxed clothing, you will master semi-formal wear. Remember to enjoy and have fun with your style!
