old telephone

Tags: telephone
When I was a young boy in Ontario we did not have a Telephone . The only time I can remember talking on a telephone was when my Dad had stepped on a rusty nail and had to go to the city to go the hospital. I was very excited about the fact that I was going to talk to my Dad. The only phone in the area was at one of the neighbors that lived across the road and down about half  kilometer. Mom got all of us ready to go for the walk to the neighbors and walked down the road to the neighbors house. When we arrived at the neighbors house there it was the telephone. It was an old style phone .It looked like a big box on the wall. The phone was the old crank telephone with a crank handle to call the telephone operator. There was no dial to us to phone a number, and of course no number pad like today's telephones. The ear piece was a big cylinder piece that had a cord attached to it with the other end attached to the wall piece. In order to talk into the telephone you had to speak into the cylinder looking  piece on the front of the box that was hanging on the wall. I had to stand on a chair to be able to speak into the wall piece. I do not remember the exact conversation with my Dad, but I do remember that my first telephone conversation was with my Dad. It was very exciting . I did not talk on a telephone until we moved to Victoria British Columbia.
