Upcycled Sewing for a Great Gift

If you have a knack for sewing, then you probably have made a multitude of gifts for people during the holidays over the years. Not only is this process cheaper when considering the cost of Clothing, it can easily become a way to personalize an item for a specific person. Have you ever considered upcycling old blankets and shirts to make something new from the material? What are some ways you can change these old garments into something new and unique?

1. Quilts - Using patches of material from old cloth items, you can make a unique quilted blanket for someone special. By cutting swatches of the material that are in good condition, you can make everything from a blue-jean quilt to something more spectacular using old Hawaiian shirts. Although sewing each swatch together is quite time consuming, the end result will be nothing short of amazing.

2. Christmas Stockings - Using old sweaters to make Christmas stockings can provide you with a gift that is unique for someone in your life. By using pieces of cloth worn by an Individual, you connect the item and make it more personal to that individual. It could be that a favorite shirt is beyond wearable, but pieces of it can still be used in a stocking to make the item instill memories and enjoyment.

3. Pajamas - Sewing a set of pajamas from a collection of old and unwearable clothing can provide additional use in the material. It's also another method of re-connecting a person to favorite clothing items that are no longer wearable as a whole. This collage of patterns from various other materials can connect to an individual in the same way as the stocking mentioned above. Sure, you can make a brand new set of pajamas from scratch with never-before-used fabric. However, making it from the favorite clothing of an individual adds far more personalization from the item.

4. Pillow Cases - Personalization doesn't have to stop merely for wearable clothing. Pillow cases made from old fabric could easily become a coveted item. Of course this is dependent on the type of material you use. Making a pillow case out of blue-jeans may not be the most ideal as the material is more course and abrasive on a face. However, making one of these out of old cotton pajamas of the individual could be a welcome addition to any bed-spread.

5. Throw Pillows - Why settle for developing a pillow case when you can make the entire pillow? While it may cost a bit more to make as you include the pillow stuffing, these items can make great presents especially if they are made from old shirts that were personal favorites of the individual. If you're feeling up to it, you could go so far as to embroider the pillow while you're making it with a special message unique to that person.

Upcycling is not only a cheaper method of getting the material to craft new items, but it adds a great deal of personality to these goods as well. Using old shirts that were personal favorites of an individual connects them on a deeper emotional level and promotes more meaning behind the gift. Anyone can go to a store and buy a shirt, but it won't have the same interpersonal meaning attached.
