Scutoid Shape: Things You Need To Know

Welcome to Ignob. Today’s article is all about Scutoid Shape.
We all knew about a square, cuboid, triangle, and 3D shapes. Here come the new form called “Scutoid Shape.” It was discovered by Spanish scientists recently. Few researchers from the University of Seville was conducting an experiment on epithelial cells, the building blocks of embryos that eventually end up forming our skin and lining our organs and blood vessels.




Scientists are conducting experiments, and the results are weird and surprisingly lead to the formation of the new shape, Scutoid. In the beginning, they thought it was just a three-dimensional shape, like a cube or a sphere but not like either of those things.

It has got a different shape which hadn’t witnessed in the history of mathematics till the last week. To be simple it has got a shape of has five sides on one end and six on the other and a triangular surface on one of its longer edges. Scientists have suggested to it as a twisted prism kind of appearance that allows the tissue to mold around organs.


What Scientists has to say?

“The Studies about epithelial cells have focused mostly on one side, the surface of these cells, partly because of technical restrictions. And extrapolated that surface as a proxy for their three-dimensional structure,” Buceta explained.

“We made a computational model that predicted these shapes and then confirmed this result in a number of tissues of various animals, added Buceta.




Scientist on naming the Scutoid:

Javier Buceta, the systems biologist at Lehigh University and co-author, was grateful and honorable for the chance to name a new geometric shape. “You normally don’t have the opportunity in your life to name something that will hopefully be there forever,” Buceta told.

“It’s not going to be the circle or the square, but we have been able to name a new shape” never before seen in nature.

The team also noted that the scutoid could have importance in many scientific fields, including medical biology. For an instance, since scutoid-shaped cells are so efficient. They are effective at staying packed together during development, they could be great for developing artificial organs because they would offer architectural balance when a tissue bends.
