Clean Bills All Round

It had been a tiring two days for your daddy, running back and forth from home and Hospital. It was worth it though as everything was well prepared for you. Between those trips up and down, your daddy still had time to worry.

If you remember earlier, I stated that the pediatrician had informed me that your mummy’s procedure had gone smoothly? I went on to say it wasn’t entirely accurate… Well, as it turned out, there were complications during the operation. Due to her previous op, some abdominal adhesions had developed on certain sections of her intestines. Our gynaecologist had to call in a colorectal specialist, just to free up the effected areas so you could be delivered safely. This caused a bit of damage to your Mummy. He did manage to repair it but it would need additional time to heal. The damage was repaired so why was I worried? Well, it isn’t as simple as that, the hospital would not discharge your mummy unless they were sure that she had healed up sufficiently and that her digestive tract was functioning sufficiently. If it wasn’t, that would mean a longer hospital stay. It weighed heavily on both our minds.

Up till then, you were doing well. You were eating well enough and the pediatrician and ward nurses did not show any signs of concerns. Still, we had opted for you to have the optional metabolic and hearing tests… The results of which we hadn’t gotten back. Besides that, you had shown some symptoms of mild jaundice and had to undergo phototherapy. The hospital would only release you if they felt that you were healthy enough. Being first time parents, Your mummy was still dealing with the awkwardness of breastfeeding. It wasn’t easy to hold you and get you to latch on properly, feed you, switch sides then do it all over again. Furthermore, we weren’t sure if you were drinking enough. There was hardly any indication. It was all new and I would admit, overwhelming. Up till then we had the nurses to help position you and make sure you were feeding correctly… but how would we handle you when we brought you home?

Nearly all that anxiety vanished on the last day of our hospital stay. Both you and your mummy were given a clean Bill of health. It looked like things were progressing according to plan after all. Better yet, we had a visit from your daddy’s side of the family, which helped to dispel a lot of uncertainty. Up till then, you had only been visited briefly by your mummy’s side of the family. Now you were seen and held by both sides. It was beautiful.

Your Grandma holding you for the first time.
