So something spooky for the month that brings us Halloween!
Book of Souls is essentially about a Secret library of books that can tell you who is born and who dies in every day of every year until the year 2027.
“And on each page was written the selfsame words. 9 February, 2027. Finis Dierum. Their work was done. They had no need to write more names. They had reached the End of Days.”
There’s more to it than that though!
Deep underground under the Nevada desert lies a super secret ancient library. So secret that the US government are ensuring it stays classified under lock and key.
“There he opened it to a random page and lost himself for a few minutes in a litany of lives, long gone, a book of souls.”
But when a shady group of ex-employees start sniffing around and wanting to let the entire world know what the pages of the library hold and a missing book ends up at an auction house; they call on retired FBI agent Will Piper to obtain it and unlock the most ultimate of secrets of the library.
Will discovers a sonnet holding a series of clues, revealing the book has a huge impact on all of humankind…past, present and future. Woman, men, children.
“We learned that God alone chooses the moment of our birth and our death, and by logic, all that transpires during our days on earth.”
But he is being watched. And every move he makes, every revelation he unveils, puts him and his family in perilous danger.
“When we attribute prescience to God, we mean that all things always were, and ever continue under his eye; that to his knowledge there is no past or future, but all things are present, and indeed so present that it is not merely the idea of him that is before him, but that he truly sees and contemplates them as actually under his immediate inspection.”
The library holds secrets and the truth is too powerful to be kept hidden for long.
“What are you?..Why don’t you tell me your secrets?”
Now in all honesty, this was a weird book. The plot sounded amazing, super intriguing and spooky. I expected more from this book than what I got.
The short chapters meant it was an easy read, nothing to complicated bar the flipping between past and present.
While the book itself is intriguing and the plot itself is good…the book didn’t give me anything. Just lots of bloodshed. And religion.

I know I would want it kept a secret, despite all temptations I’m not sure what good it would do – we all know that at some time or another, we will all leave the land of the living and join the dead. What difference does that make if it’s in 3 months, 3 years or 3 decades? We should live each day as if it’s our last, no regrets.
