What is Internet? Definition, Meaning & Explanation

What is Internet? Definition, Meaning & Explanation for Newbies to  Create a Niche Blog or a Niche Website - Blogging Basic - Helping beginners get Online.

The first question every newbie needs to be informed - if he/she wants to create a blog, build a website or any other niche in days to come - has been answered?

"The Internet is related to connecting the computers and other similar gadgets with just a network of wires."

Most of the people in this world know how to use the net or an Internet without actually understanding how it works. Likewise electricity in your home. You use electricity every single day but you may not understand the basics, mechanism behind it.

So, if the electricity grid is difficult to understand then the Internet must also be impossible for you to understand.

Right? Wrong! In the next few minutes, I will put you in the top ten percent of people who understand how the Internet actually works.

Whenever most people think of the Internet this is what really comes to mind, the Internet is all about a website or a world wide web (www).

I have heard people say, "my Internet is not working" whenever the website goes offline and fails to display a web page due to server error, possibly due to server maintenance or technical fault on the server side.

So, people, have a different concept and mostly refer the Internet as a webpage rather than what Internet really is.

This fuzzy picture of Internet has been developed and circulating for decades because of the peoples who are more concerned about job security rather than educating. It's very unfortunate that the fuzzy imagination about the internet is wrong.

World Wide Web is not synonymous with the Internet though it shares a common interest.

What is an Internet?

The Internet, sometimes also referred as the net is a network of wired or wireless communication system connecting various devices across the globe, not limited to outer space.

So, the Internet is simply a network of wires (may be copper, fiber optics and occasionally beamed through satellites, cell towers to provide wireless communication to modern-day cellphones and computers.) actually buried underground, undersea and connected to different computers through the globe.

The Internet is used to transmit an unlimited range of information which helps to establish a communication between devices as far as both the devices are connected with each other with the help of a server.

What is a Web Server?

A server is a special type of computer connected directly to the Internet. A web server stores web pages and variety of files on the hard drive and processes it when queried by us using a personal computer and a web browser connected to the internet.

Every server has a unique internet protocol or the IP address just like a postal address. IP address helps computers find each other. The IP address is numerical, for example, 120.124.256. Can you remember this address? Certainly not. So before you'll twist your tongue while saying aloud, you may also call it by its name, for instance, Google, Facebook, etc.

Is Your Computer a Web Server?

Sorry, no. It is not because the computer you and I use every day is not connected directly to the Internet. The computer we use is called a client because they are connected indirectly to the internet through a different service provider.

Whenever your friend seeks for a file in your computer using his computer connected to the Internet he will not be able to retrieve it unless your computer is a server or your friend uses some specially designed software.

Your friend's and your computer should be connected to a server before you can exchanges files. Let me make it more clear. I have a desktop at home and now I want to retrieve a web page from Googles web server than what do I need to do?
  1. Connect my computer to the Internet.
  2. Open a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc).
  3. Type URL of Google (https://www.google.com/) in the address bar of a web browser.
My computer connects to the Googles web server through the Internet it queries for the particular webpage I am looking for, and the googles web server executes it. The result, I will see a Googles web page on my monitor. Coincidentally the webpage you are reading on the monitor is also provided by a web server for your query. Surprising! You may be. Right? This is how things work.

Sending An email

Now, again if I want to connect with my friend by sending an email, how is it processed. Ok, let's say my friend has an email address by the name [email protected] created with Gmail. I have also created one email address with Gmail but by different name [email protected] (yes, we can't be an identical email address. If you want to create an email address you may register at Gmail) What's next?
  1. I will connect my computer to the net.
  2. Open a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc).
  3. Type URL of Gmail (https://www.google.com/gmail) in the address bar of a web browser.
  4. Fill up the email form and send it to [email protected]
As soon as I hit send button my email goes to the web server of Gmail. Now, what will my friend needs to do to retrieve the email I had sent.

  1. My friend connects his computer to the net.
  2. Opens a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, InternetExplorer, etc).
  3. Type URL of Gmail (https://www.google.com/gmail) in the address bar of a web browser and visits Gmails web server.
  4. The web page opens in his monitor and my friend retrieves the email I posted earlier.

How is communication establish by Internet?

When the computer connects to the server (special computer) directly to this wire or a wireless beam a communication can be established.

Who provides the internet to us?

Internet Service Provider (ISP). Most of the internet access providers charge a set free per day, month or a year and in return they provide us an access to the services like surfing web pages, uploading, downloading, watching movies, sending messages, listening to audios and etc. The fee usually includes how much services you want to use.

The use of inter-net services is measured in bytes, megabytes, gigabits etc. For example, if you want to make use of 1000 megabyte of bandwidth than you might be asked to pay Rs. 100 or any other denomination as per the company's plan. So, for the additional use, you need to pay more. However, these days most of the Internet Service Provider offers unlimited access to the net by paying the certain amount fixed by them.
