Cursed With A Gap Year

Why do people take a gap year? God knows! it might be a new trend going on nowadays. Supposedly whoever takes a gap year,  gain a great deal of work experience through travelling, volunteering or working in general and believe me or not, some people manage to do all these activities in one year so, they can't be bored at home playing the PS4 all day long and stay connected with the society rather than become hostile and lonely by spending all their gap year at home.

Nevertheless, some people embark on this journey unintentionally as they are often left with no choice. For example students who fail to meet entry requirements for their Universities, have to resit their A levels in order to get into the universities of their choice.

In my case, I achieved the grades higher than I was required to get in order to do Pharmacy. So, I had an option to apply through adjustment to an institution better than my firm choice and  there was no way that I could let this chance go. Hence, I did apply to a better University and successfully managed to get a place confirmed in the university as well.

Suddenly, all the excitement of going to university turned into sadness when I realised that my Student Finance application has been rejected as I won't have been living in the UK for three years before 1st September which meant a gap year was coming my way inevitably.

Everyone in my family knew how much excited I was when I received my results and first got to know that I'll be going to uni after coming out victorious from my two years long battle with sixth form. Like all the best families, my family tried to help me get though this emotional setback and started to counsel me regarding how I shall spend my gap year. One of the tips they stated was that If I have a job for this whole year, the gap year will pass by like a new Lamborghini Huracan.

Like an obedient kid, I applied for a job and thankfully, I was accepted for the job. However, the time didn't pass by as quickly as promised by my family. I knew! I knew! I knew that they were exaggerating.

Over the last two months, I've already quit two jobs. Now, I stay at home and play Fifa 17 on my PS4 all day long. I think my parents want to disown me but they can't now as my a levels achievement hasn't fully faded away from their memories and therefore, they're still proud of me. Let's see how long they can put up with the fact that I'll be staying at home this year.

Glossary:

A levels are a type of qualifications that can lead to university or further study in the UK. Normally, students study 3 A levels at a time over two years. They're usually carried out with the help of a series of examinations.

Firm Choice: In the UK, we're only allowed to apply for 5 universities of our choice. Out of the universities where we apply for, we can only get to choose two of them. Our first choice university is called 'Firm' which is supposed to have higher requirements than our second choice which we choose as a back up option if things doesn't go as planned. This second choice university is called 'Insurance'.

Student Finance: Here in the UK, students may be able to borrow money from the UK Government to help pay their university dues and it also covers their living cost.
