Does Light Therapy Really Work for Acne?

Tags: mask therapy acne

If you suffer from Acne, chances are you've tried EVERYTHING under the sun to help treat your skin. I'm now in my 30s and I still suffer from acne despite cleansing, toning, and using OTC + prescription acne medications. When most people are swapping acne skincare for anti-aging skincare, I am still dealing with acne. However, I recently learned about light Therapy for acne. With the FDA-cleared Neutrogena Light Mask, I can finally start weaning off harsh acne medications.

I've had acne for what seems like my entire life. I've used harsh prescription pills and ineffective prescription creams, so you can kinda say that the drugstore and high-end beauty stores have been my saving grace. I'm now entering a point in life where I want to hydrate and treat my skin with anti-aging products at night instead of drying acne treatments.

How Does Light Therapy Help with Acne?

When I first heard of light therapy for acne, I honestly thought it was yet another cruel gimmick the industry was tempting me with. I mean, light? How is a colored light going to be any different than sunlight?

Boy, was I wrong.

So how does it work, exactly? The LED blue light kills the P. Acnes bacteria responsible for breakouts. The LED red light reduces inflammation. The easy-to-use, portable design is great for on-the-go acne treatment, and leaves behind no mess or residue. I packed my mask in my carry-on during our Arizona trip, and I was happy to use the mask to help prevent stress-induced breakouts, and any climate-changining breakouts.

I recently saw an aesthetician for a lash procedure (details coming soon!) and I told her I was using the Neutrogena Light Therapy mask for a few weeks. She immediately told me a personal story of how light therapy worked for her. When she was in school, her classmates applied red light to her forehead. After a treatment, her skin redness had visibly improved!

Honestly, after she told me that, I felt more confident in my purchase of the the light therapy mask.

How does the Neutrogena Light Therapy Mask Work?

Once only available in dermatologists’ offices (at around $400 per session!), clinically proven light therapy is now available at home with this mask for only $30! I have used the mask consistently for the past three weeks and can honestly say I. Am. Hooked. (And so is my husband!)

The mask is all plastic, so it is light-weight and comfortable. There is an eye piece that helps it rest on your nose, but since the LED lights don't contain any UV light, it is perfectly safe to use near your eyes!

The battery-powered handheld activator is good for 30 once-daily uses, and it allows the mask to work for one 10-minute treatment at a time. A screen displays how many uses you have left in the activator. Since it is a medical device, the activator ensures a safe rate of usage at home.

When the counter reaches zero, you purchase a new activator at your local drugstore.

98% of users reported fewer breakouts after using the Neutrogena Light Therapy Acne Mask in as little as 1 week with results improving over time.

How to use the Neutrogena Light Therapy Mask

Start with a clean face

Wipe off the day's makeup with the Neutrogena oil-free makeup removing wipes.

Cleanse your face with a good cleanser. I like to use the Neutrogena Deep Clean facial cleanser to remove any gunk left in my pores to help prevent any blemishes.

Gently pat your skin dry, and apply your favorite toner (optional).

Wear and Turn on Mask

Slip on the mask and press the button on the activator.

Easy peasy.

Relax

Seriously, this is the perfect time to indulge in a nice Instagram or Facebook scroll, or catch up with your TV binge-fest.

My Experience with the Neutrogena Light Therapy Mask

Like I said at the beginning of this post, I was a little unsure that LED colored lights would make a difference in my skin. However, my skin hasn't looked and felt this good in YEARS!

My favorite part of this experience has been the relaxing routine that I've made for my bedtime. Since it's recommended you wash your face before use, it also ensures that I wash my face before bed...something I wasn't always doing before.

The first thing I noticed after using the light therapy mask was that I had immediate, overnight reduction in sebum production. I've had oily skin since puberty, even affecting how I appeared under stage lights, so having less oily skin was amazing. I'm not sure if it was a coincidence, but my scalp also produced less sebum. YES!

Secondly, the painful, cystic acne I developed along my jawline and under my chin was less tender and less red overnight. The bumps were drastically less palpable overnight as well. The most stubborn ones took two nightly treatments to make a visible difference.

What I was most surprised about was the ability of the light mask's treatment to treat redness. The red light treats inflammation, so it shouldn't have come as any surprise when the redness across my cheeks was visibly reduced by morning. Neutrogena's clinical studies show that, with continued use, I should see my skin improving over time. I can't wait to see how my skin looks and feels in the next 30 days.

After my husband saw my skin's improvement, he decided to purchase the Neutrogena Light Therapy Spot Treatment and loves it!
