PRINCESS IS ANTI WOMAN

Ps: not meant to attack “Princess Priya” and “Angel Neha” on facebook

Imagine a princess.

I get a cold Imagination of fair girls with delicate arms, snow touch skin, glimpsing lips with bright eyes and long thick hairs. To be precisely put in a PINK background with a strawberry loving touch….  The imagination lends me to another imagination where I realize my former imagination is too fictional to be real.

We all can maximize our imagination of pink to be replaced by blue but never to the odds such as black or green.

Our imagination somehow embraces patriarchy which every princess inside us wants to defeat but we are poisoning the same. Princess Cindrella, Rapunzel, Snow  White all have taught us to grow fair and strong and beautiful still wait for a prince to kiss our forehead and bring enlightenment to our soul. We could thrashback our aunties calling them narrow minded if they bring in early marriage ideas but would pass on the stories of poor Cindrella whose prince was all she needed to our niece and nephews.

The concept of princess has been designed by Disney which is mostly associated and known for its amusement park is not just having its say in the amusement parks. The company holds shares in media industry which makes it one of the largest media corporations. Disney captures every child’s imagination and perception by holding a large no of cartoon channels such as DISNEY CHANNEL, PLAYHOUSE DISNEY, and TOON DISNEY etc. Disney Company also holds for the teenage part of one’s life by having adventure and sports channel such as ESPN SPORTS, ESPN2, ESPN HD etc. it also has stake on one’s adulthood and has informative channels such as abc NEWS, NOW NEWS etc. and daily soap operas such as abcFAMILY, SOAP, LIFETIME etc. embracing all the phases of lifetime with their thoughts and ideas.

So the Anti-Woman Princess has been attacking women freedom through:

1. Cartoons in younger age displaying stories of Princess.

2. Sports channel host who generally serve as a caricature to the stereotypical idea of beauty and glamour steering the male hormone.

3. And finally daily soaps aiming at the core of womanhood as dependence on male.

Series where individual happy existence of a girl is shown is rare.

These movies are made to embrace the patriarchy by embracing the old set stereotype of girlishness such as liking for pink, like most of the backgrounds are pink. The movies would have sparkles to show they are for feminine. But I now realize that the concept of PRINCESS is actually ANTI WOMAN. Also Princess theory propagates that the idea of being in a relationship and tying knot is the most important and auspicious event. This takes us back to the phase where the corporates set ideologies and make us unaware of our real conditions of existence leaving us thirsty for unrealistic ideas which can never be more than personal choice such as falling in love, having a family a better job where we find weekends as opportunities to watch their production. They leave us wanting the smoother side making us unaware of our working conditions, higher education, exposure to research etc. and we find solemnity by fantasizing us in their parts of role.
No doubt with feministic attacks is changing the content by including modern princess like Mulan and Merida as warriors. It also has created Tiana the entrepreneur, Belle the bookworm etc. which are not just fashion dolls.

But Princess needs to be a character which also fights the contemporary issues such as LGBT community, live in relationship, free independent happy existence etc. Movies where a princess falls for another girl and supports the existence of odds in a society must welcome and broaden the “princess” spectra. It needs to visualize women in roles where she is the support system of her family and is taking up her higher education and dream job. Princess needs to break stereotypes of fair and slim girls. A princess can be fat, dark, bald, and short but still a beautiful soul and an idol for the society.

So next time while narrating a princess fable to a child make sure you go the right way to real princess of the world and warriors of all time directing them to stories of Kalpana Chawla, Malala, Kiran Bedi,Geeta Phogat, Babita Kumari, Deepika Kumari, etc.
