How to Clean a Futon Matress?

A Futon Mattress gets used too much. Because it doubles up as a couch during the day and a bed at night, a build-up of dirt and grime is almost unavoidable. Learning how to take care of it can make it last for long while looking superbly clean. So, how do you clean a futon mattress? Here is how.

Removing Surface Spills and Stains

The best way to deal with stains on a futon mattress is to work on them while they’re still fresh. For a spill of drink or food, use a piece of cloth, preferably cotton, to soak it up. Avoid rubbing off the fresh spill, or it will spread and cover a larger area.

After soaking up the stain, pour about a teaspoon of washing detergent on it and use a wet piece of cotton cloth to rub it off.

Dip another piece cloth in warm water and rub off the stained area to rinse off the detergent.

Alternatively, you can use a commercial stain remover or rubbing alcohol. Spray it on the affected area to soak up the stain and rinse it off with a damp piece of cloth dipped in warm water.

Removing Urine

Because the futon mattress acts as a sleeping place, urine on it is most common, especially if children use it. To remove urine, use these steps:

Soak up excess urine using pieces of blotting paper.

Spray the futon mattress with vinegar on the affected area.

Blot out the vinegar with the blotting paper or towel.

Sprinkle plenty of baking soda and allow it to soak in the vinegar. Let it stay for a day if possible.

Brush off the baking soda and vacuum the area.

Odors on a Futon Mattress

A futon mattress will inevitably get unwanted odors: what with children, adults and pets lying on it all day, and night. To have it remain fresh-smelling, you need to deodorize it now and then. The process of removing odors from futon mattresses is simple and are often DIY( do it yourself). Here are steps how:

You will need:

  • A box of baking soda
  • A vacuum cleaner
  • How to do it

Lay the futon mattress on a flat surface, preferably the floor.

Start by vacuuming pet hair and dust off the mattress, all the while brushing it to remove stuck particles.

Next, sprinkle on the mattress the baking soda.

Allow it to stay for at least half an hour, so the baking soda gets to absorb odors.

Brush off and vacuum the baking soda.

Do the same to the other side.

Your mattress is now deodorized and ready for use.

Cleaning Tips For a Durable and Ever Clean Futon Mattress

To reduce the number of cleanups, you have to carry out for your futon mattress and their intensity, apply the following tips

  • Turn the mattress over now and then so no, one side gets more dirt than the other. It makes cleaning easy as the dirt is not concentrated to only one side. It also allows the mattress to wear in an even way
  • Regularly air the futon mattress to prevent mold and mildew growth
  • Remove the cover of the futon mattress when it’s not being used to allow it to aerate; it prevents odors from building up in strength, making the deodorizing process simple and effective
  • Wash bedding used together with the mattress to prevent their dirt rubbing onto your futon mattress
  • Vacuum it often, not giving dirt time to settle and get stuck. That way, vacuuming it is likely to remove all dirt, plus it takes you less time to do so. A weekly routing is recommended although it depends on how frequently you use the mattress, and the type of people using it. Children tend to soil it more through food spills and if they play on it
  • Use a cover on the mattress; its easier to clean a cover than the mattress itself
  • Always clean your room. Often, the dirt on the floor finds its way to the futon mattress when people carry it on their feet and onto the mattress

Knowing how to clean a futon mattress the right way is important. When cleaning the mattress, avoid soaking it up at all costs. It would take time to dry, and you also risk having mold grow on it. Wipe any cleaning liquid you use on it immediately, using either a dry towel, piece of cloth, or blotting paper. Clean the futon mattress often to avoid a buildup of dirt and stains.
