It was in 2004, in the United Kingdom’s when the then Labor government decided to make the studying of foreign languages voluntary. This as expected, has led to a fall in demand by young people wanting to learn a second language. Just in the last decade learning French and German has fallen by 50 percent. A few years after second language learning became voluntary it was mentioned by Mark Oaten a former MP representing the liberal democratic party that learning German, for example, was useless as English was the main language used by businesses all over the world. However, all these changes haven’t affected the demand for German to English translation services.
This general opinion concerning languages has held and English is being used more and more on a global scale and so there is an increasing demand for German to English translation services.
However, other countries think differently and 68 percent of students in Japan study German, which isn’t that surprising as Germany is seen as the 2nd most powerful country in the world economically. Japan’s young people see the importance of learning German, while UK students see it totally different. With the high ranking, Germany gets in the global economic scenario one would have thought ambitious students would be demanding to learn German, particularly as for every one job for a graduate in Britain there are 70 applicants. Having knowledge of German one would have thought would have been a boost to a job application.
Germany takes the lead as the European Union’s most influential economy, but it also lies in 4th position worldwide.
There are indications that in the EU and the newer economies of Eastern and central Europe, the importance of German as the language for business communication is increasing. Countries like the UK will fall behind if it’s unable to find qualified German language speakers who can provide services to match the growing need for German to English translation services. So far, the prices are competitive, but the translators are depending on machine translators to finalise their translations and they are not always completely accurate. The dependence on machine translators has only arisen because they are a quick, affective answer to translation demands but it doesn’t take long for businesses to realise they are paying for an inferior product.
