HOW TO UPGRADE Fedora 27 WORKSTATION TO FEDORA 28 WORKSTATION IN SIMPLE WAY

Introduction

As we already know that Fedora 28 “Cutting Edge” has been released on 1 May 2018 with new Features, Updates and Bug Fixes. Here in this article I will how you How to upgrade from Fedora 27 to Fedora 28. Now let’s have a look at the major changes in Fedora 28 :

  • Gnome 3.28 Desktop Environment
  • New Modular repository
  • For first time Fedora has allowed their users to enable some 3rd party package repositories like Google Chrome, Steam, Nvidia Drivers, PyCharm and many more.
  • Prefer to Fedora Spins if you are interested in Desktop Environments like Cinnamon, KDE or Xfce
  • So many Power saving features are enabled in Fedora 28 which will help the Laptop users to improve battery life
  • Supports Thunderbolt
  • Emoji support
  • VirtualBox Guest Additions now default
  • Now Fedora 28 Workstation will won’t ask for root password during installation but obviously you can set the root password post installation. That means root password is optional now.

This article is for those users who are currently using the Fedora 27 and want to install the latest Fedora 28 without formatting. Now let’s have look at up-gradation steps :

There are two ways by which you can Upgrade to Fedora 28 from Fedora 27 :

1. Graphical Way :

Post release of Fedora 28 all fedora users by default get a notification that update is available. Open the GNOME Software app by clicking on that notification.

OR

Choose Software option from Gnome Shell and click on Update Tab.

After above step you will get a window with text Fedora 28 now available. Here just click on Download button.

Post completion of downloading just restart the system from Gnome Software window to apply the downloaded update. That’s It and now you are ready to use Fedora 28.

2. Update through Command Line :

The command line way is simplest way to Upgrade Fedora from lower version to latest version. We can do so using dnf upgrade Plugin.

Step : 1

Before start the Upgradation process just update the packages and repositories of Fedora 27 using below command.

# sudo dnf upgrade --refresh

Step : 2

After updating the Packages & Repositories use the below command to Install the dnf Plugin.

# sudo dnf install dnf-plugin-system-upgrade

Step : 3

After above steps now our system is ready for up-gradation process. So just use the below command to download the Fedora 28 to local system and prepare your system for up-gradation.

# sudo dnf system-upgrade download --releasever=28

Step : 4

After completion of downloading Now need to reboot your system to apply the updates. So use the below command to restart the system

# sudo dnf system-upgrade reboot

After reboot the system Fedora 28 up-gradation process will run for some time. Be patient. Once process completed you are ready to use Fedora latest version i.e. Fedora 28.
