For the love of… Colour?! – Guest post by Cordelia Moor

Sometimes we get stuck in a right rut when it comes to Makeup, but how do we jazz it up? Can we implement a splash of colour? Can we?! Let’s see if it’s easier than expected with our Guest poster Cordelia Moor literally giving us the Clarissa on this ish…

Not just colour. I used to be terrified of makeup full stop! I was scared that people would be able to tell that I had foundation on, that I’d completely mess up the application or that people would judge me for wearing makeup, the list really went on. For years I stuck to just mascara unless I was on stage and had no other choice. Thinking about it now, perhaps that’s why I was so scared of wearing makeup because most of my experience had come from heavy stage makeup. I digress…

Now, at the grand old age of 22, my views on makeup and my makeup process have done a complete 180. Although I don’t tend to wear much makeup on a daily basis still (sue me, I’m lazy), I love colour more than anything else. Give me the rainbow and I’m a happy gal. I have an entire Argos storage tower full of foundations, powders and palettes galore.  I also have a hefty collection of brightly coloured single loose powder shadows from Give Face Cosmetics.

Give me all the bright colours! I know, as a blogger, I am probably supposed to be obsessed with muted tones, browns and pinks, but I just can’t help myself. I want blues, greens, pinks, yellows – neons and brights galore. I want all of them. At the same time, on their own for an edgy monochrome look, in complementary or clashing colour palettes, I love them all.

I am also very aware that introducing colour into your makeup can be terrifying. Not the same sort of terrifying as abseiling down a ridiculously tall cliff, or being chased by a man with a chainsaw, but the sort of terrifying where you think you look ridiculous and everyone is judging you.

Spoiler alert? Colour makes you look fabulous. That little pop of electric blue can brighten up an all-black outfit. That bold purple lip makes you look like you mean business. More than anything else in the world, it’s so much fun adding in bits of colour to your face, especially when more often than not people expect to see neutral colours that ‘fit in’.

Well, screw fitting in. It’s time to stand out.

With that in mind,  I thought I would jot down my five favourite easy ways to introduce a bit of colour into your makeup, along with several of the best places to get affordable, colourful makeup. Going full whack might work for some, but it definitely isn’t for everyone, so this’ll make sure you still feel your makeup is ‘wearable’.

First things first: when I’m looking for cheap, good quality colourful eyeshadows I go straight to Give Face Cosmetics. The loose powder format takes some getting used to, but you can’t beat the quality and the pigmentation. The second place I always go is NYX Cosmetics – cruelty-free and pretty affordable, they not only have a wide variety of lipstick colours and vivid eyeliners, but they also do an entire palette of bright colours for £16. Knock yourselves out.

  1. Add in a dash of electric colour to your winged eyeliner.

This is quite the versatile tip. You could outline your liner with an electric blue one, just accentuate the wing with a pop of yellow or red, or even go the whole hog and do neon green or orange winged eyeliner. The world is really your oyster when it comes to this, and it depends on your comfort level – but it always looks fab.

  1. Try a coloured mascara

Black mascara is so yesterday. More and more brands are coming out with coloured mascaras, and as the pigment generally tends to veer on the more subtle side this can be a fun way to introduce a spot of colour without people noticing immediately. Try it with or without a winged liner, but go easy on the eyeshadow. Let the mascara be the talking point. Bonus: It’ll mean your makeup doesn’t need to take as long.

  1. Use a pop of shimmery colour in the centre of your eye

Another easy method I like to use is blending muted brown transitional shades into my crease (darkening it at the very edges of my eyes), and then using a wet brush to press on a bright shimmery shade onto the centre of my eye for that pop of colour, before finishing with mascara and occasionally eyeliner. It’s wearable, you can pick a complementary shade for your eyes, and it’s bloody easy to do.

  1. Try a duochrome/coloured highlighter

Perhaps on the slightly scarier end of the spectrum, if you keep the rest of your makeup reasonably natural, a highlighter with some colour in it is actually a lot of fun. I personally like a pink or green duochrome, or a lilac highlighter. Absolutely gorgeous, and takes approximately three seconds to do.

  1. If all else fails – lipstick

There are some really cool brands bringing out some really cool colours of lipstick these days, which can be a fun and easy way to bring some colour. Whether that be a delicious apple red that makes you feel powerful, or something more out there like blue, green, or purple – coloured lipstick is hard to mess up and always gives you a talking point. Literally. It’s on your lips.
