'Woman'- is a word that explore up a lot of images in our minds and brings out varied emotions as selfless love, nurturing and caring attitude. Who is a woman? The dictionary meaning of a Woman is adult female human but this definition cannot do justice to the role of woman. A woman is much more than these words. Read on to find more about the significance of Women's Day celebration.

“A woman is a full circle. Within her is the power to create, nurture and transform.” Understanding a woman is a mystery and it needs lots of patience and knowledge. A woman is the selfless love, sacrifice, care and ability to nurture life.

The quality of a woman can be understood with these thoughts “If a woman has to choose between catching a fly ball and saving an infant’s life, she will choose to save the infant’s life without even considering there are men at the base.” Such is the power of a woman.

The ability to nurture life makes woman the most powerful and strongest being. She can play different roles with ease be it that of a dutiful wife, obedient daughter, caring mother or adoring sister.

The culture and tradition of India is considered as old and great all over the world where people used to worship various female goddesses, saints and poets. India is also a powerful nation and famous worldwide for being the largest democracy in the world however, women backwardness is also very clear in the Indian society because of the social issues, problems and lots of restrictions against women. Women belong to the lower and middle class family suffers more than the women of higher class family. Women in the Indian society generally face problems of sex discrimination, high percentage of illiteracy, female infanticide, dowry system, etc.Women in India are considered as burden for their parents and husbands as they think that women are here only to consume money whole life without earning a little bit. However, a lot of positive changes has occurred in the women status as the number of educated people is increasing in the country.

In rural India these problems are still exist:

  • Selective abortion and female infanticide
  • Sexual harassment
  • Dowry and Bride burning
  • Disparity in education
  • Domestic violence
  • Girls have no property rights like boys forever.
  • Child Marriages
  • Inadequate Nutrition
  • Domestic violence and status in the family
  • Status of widows

Empowering women in India or world is very necessary to bring gender equality or we can say that gender equality is very necessary to empower women.Gender equality is the first step to bring women empowerment in India. Men should not understand that women are made only to handle household works or take responsibility of home and family. Instead, both (men and women) are responsible for everything of daily routine. Men too need to understand their responsibility of home and family and all other works women do so that women can get some time to think about themselves and their career. Women should also identify their strengths and abilities, and move towards a world of empowerment.

It is really nice to have a special day for women where they are glorified to a point of being honored, awarded, and appreciated. Then why is that after so much awareness and acknowledgement of a woman’s contribution to life ,society, family and work; saluting her strength, resilience, sacrifice she still is considered only second to men and treated like a second rate citizen ? This is because for generations, it has been ingrained among women that they are not capable of doing most things. Women empowerment lies in honoring yourself and treating yourself with respect.

It’s a fact that women are equally responsible for all that a woman has to face. This fact can be illustrated by the fact that it is women who is responsible for the diminishing strength of the other women, be it the home or the work place. There are women who with their thinking do not let the other women come out from the stereotypes and taboos so, an inclusive, transformation in the way of our thinking is important! Women too need to learn to respect their fellow women and encourage in whatever dream they have for themselves. At the end men and women must realize their respective equal roles and strive to complement each other in their shared struggle to improve life.
