The RAF will conduct NATO Air Policing in Iceland for the first time during 2019, the Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson MP has announced.
The RAF detachment will be based at Keflavik Air Base, Iceland, and fly its fighter jets in support of NATO’s mission that provide Airborne Surveillance and Interception Capabilities to meet Iceland’s Peacetime Preparedness Needs.
Since 2008, NATO has conducted this peacetime mission, which is specific and unique to Iceland. The focus of the peacetime preparedness mission is to link up fighter capabilities with Iceland’s air surveillance integrated into NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence System.
In addition, the RAF Typhoons will return next year to Estonia to conduct the NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission.
These deployments will allow the UK to work closely with allies to deter aerial threats to Euro Atlantic security. The mission will also provide the RAF with unique opportunities to test its skills in different environments.
UK currently has four RAF Typhoons deployed to Mihail Kogalniceanu Airbase in Romania supporting security in the South and the Black Sea region.
