There are many ancient temples in Tamil Nadu but as a tourist at least you should not miss these four temples.
Tanjore Brihadeeswarar Temple
This was built in 1010 AD by Raja Raja Chola I. This temple attracts many tourists because of its architecture.
Few of the highlights are,
- The entire temple structure is made out of granite.
- The nandi weighing about 20 tonnes is carved out of a single stone.
Tiruvannamalai Annamalaiyar temple
This is one of the biggest ancient temple. Initial structure was built in 9th century by Cholas after that this temple had been expanded by other Kings until 15th century.
Few of the highlights are,
- Girivalam-On full moon day pilgrims circumnavigate the temple base and the Annamalai hills which covers 14km.
- Kaarthigai deepam festival.
Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple
This temple was originally built in the 6th century and the latest structures was built in 16th century. The annual 10-day Meenakshi Tirukalyanam festival attracts millions of visitors.
Few of the highlights are,
- This temple has many mandapams. Some of them are Aaiyiram Kaal Mandapam, Ashtashakti Mandapam, Meenakshi Nayakan Mandapam, Killi Kootu Mandapam.
- This temple is situated in one of the oldest city called Madurai(around 2500 years old)
Ranganathaswamy Temple, Srirangam
This is again one of the 1000 years old temple. This is the largest Hindu temple in India.
Highlight :
- The temple occupies an area of 156 acres.
