The nominees for the 88th Academy Awards, aka Oscars 2016, were announced Thursday morning … and it is very interesting.
First, it looks like Leonardo DiCaprio is now sure of an Oscar award this time around, as his movie The Revenant is leading the pack with 12 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. However, the competition is going to be tough, as DiCaprio is up against the likes of Matt Damon (The Martian), 2015 winner Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) and category regular Bryan Cranston (Trumbo). The upside for DiCaprio, however, is that he won Best Actor in the 2016 Golden Globes for the same movie role and based on past scenarios, one can be safe to assume that he will most probably go home with this one.
Mad Max: Fury Road is closely following behind with 10 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. The Martian is third with 7 nominations.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens got 5 nods but didn’t score in any of the most coveted categories. But given the insane popularity of the movie, it is highly likely that it will dust the competition in the Best Sound Mixing, Best Editing and Best Visual Effects categories.
On the female side, Jennifer Lawrence again made it to the Best Actress category for the critically not-so-liked movie Joy. She will be up against Cate Blanchett (Carol), Brie Larson (Room), Charlotte Rampling (45 Years) and Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn).
As The Verge notes, there is not a single black person nominated for this year’s Oscars. Straight Outta Compton, arguably last year’s biggest movie from the African-American community, only got one nomination for Best Original Screenplay … but the screenwriters – who will take home the award should the movie win – are all white. This will definitely raise a race issue.
The Oscars ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on February 28.
