Marriage Equality

Marriage Equality

Marriage Equality is such a big issue that is plaguing the world. Should homosexual couples be given the same rights as heterosexual couples? Everyone has differing opinions whether it be based on religious, political, cultural or other reasons. These differing opinions have led to splits in legislation even with states. As of August 2013, same-sex marriage is legal in California, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington. The fact that the UNITED states is divided on this issue proves just how serious it is. As it is my blog, I’m entitled to my own opinion. My opinion being that same-sex marriage should be legal. Love is not defined by the genders involved but by the feelings, actions and behaviors it evokes. When I think of Marriage Equality, there are some songs that come to mind but most significantly would be “Same Love” by Macklemore ft. Mary Lambert.

The original video from Macklemore is extremely moving. It portrays a young boy growing up and his experience with finding his sexual identity and finding love. It shows when he has dinner with his parents and his parents are outraged by finding that their son is homosexual but later shows that his mother is present at the wedding. The lyrics are extremely blunt and honest. I feel as though Macklemore was clear of their intention in the song and they do an amazing job.

The song begins with Macklemore rapping:

“When I was in the 3rd grade
I thought that I was gay
Cause I could draw, my uncle was
And I kept my room straight
I told my mom, tears rushing down my face
She’s like, “Ben you’ve loved girls since before pre-K”
Trippin’, yeah, I guess she had a point, didn’t she
A bunch of stereotypes all in my head.”

But the most sincere and honest part (in my opinion) of the song would have to be the chorus sang beautifully by Mary Lambert:

And I can’t change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
And I can’t change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
My love, my love, my love
She keeps me warm [x4]
