Taboo in Society

To take a break from writing about the JC Penney Back-to-School advertisement, I thought I would actually speak on something I feel is more important to speak up about.

Over the news, you may recall reading about Gia Allemand, a young woman who competed to win over Jake Pavelka's heart on season fourteen of The Bachelor.  According to reports, the death was not accidental.  Much to the shock of friends, family, fans, and the media, Allemand took her life in a suicide attempt.  Prior to the occurrence, she appeared healthy, happy, and in good spirits.  However, that clearly was not the case.

The subject of depression and Mental illness is a taboo topic in society.  There is stigma attached to mental health.  Whether that simply be because of the media or the public's perception, it seems like the worst thing in the world to have.  It is often depicted that those with Mental Disorders are dangerous and unpredictable. Did Gia Allemand seem to be dangerous or unpredictable?  No.  Unfortunately, many cases go untreated because the individual is unwilling to seek help because of the stigma.  Even if they are being treated, many refuse to acknowledge they even exist so support for the individual is limited.

Honestly, I don't think I'm an expert after simply taking two Psychology courses in university.  However, I know the stigma all too well.  I know the media.  I hear what others think regarding the subject of mental disorders.  You hear it in the background.  Although, it sometimes runs a high profile case. Look in the case of bullying incidents!

In conclusion: maybe the happiest person in the world truly isn't.  Maybe if someone displays any symptoms or abnormality in their daily lives, don't ignore it.  Talk it out first. Find out what's going on in their lives.  The thing is, don't take complete control over their lives.  You have to be supportive, not condescending.

As tragic as Gia's death is, it can be a stepping stone for bringing the subject up in the future.  My deepest condolences to the Allemand family.
