The piece that can instantly take you from casual to smart is the humble tie.  This season the tie has returned to a slightly thicker incarnation than the skinny tie of seasons past. Scarves

As Autumn and Winter approaches it would be wise to invest in a scarf or two not just for practical reasons but also for their capacity to elevate basic outerwear into a style statement. For example, a simple plaid scarf can give a basic wise collared pea coat a new lease of life. It is also a very easy way to inject some colour an interest into a monochrome outfit.
