The ISMP has Released its Fourth Quarter 2010 Adverse Drug Event Report

Now that a new Report is focusing on the dangers of a couple of new drugs, many people are wondering if it will lead to future recalls. In fact, the complications with these drugs are so dangerous that many people are already calling for Drug recalls to be conducted right now.

Some of the newer drugs that made it into the report include Pradaxa, Ampyra and Tracleer. The drugs seem to be causing a significant surge in consumer adverse events reports. Some reports have also claimed death, which is really raising many concerns in the medical community as well as with consumers. The report that I am talking about is The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) which has recently released its fourth quarter 2010 adverse Drug Event Report.

The ISMP report didn’t just focus on new drugs, it also reported on older medications that are still causing quite a few problems for patients. Some of those drugs include the quit smoking drug, Chantix, Multaq and Levaquin. Multaq has been found to cause liver failure and worsen a patient’s heart condition. Since it is a heart condition drug, this is significant. In fact, a recent Multaq PALLAS study had to be halted earlier this year when patients kept dying. Still, the FDA doesn’t recall Multaq.

The new report was released to update the public on the 2010 year and shows that there have been 141,829 new cases of deadly and serious adverse side effects reported to the FDA. This shows that adverse event reports have increased 21 percent. This is just astounding when considering all of the criticism the regulators have received already over their approval process, which have been accused of being “too lenient.” Perhaps if the FDA had better approval processes, these drugs wouldn’t make it to the market so quickly and cause so many patients to become ill or die.

The fact is that Drug Recalls will continue to rise at an astonishing rate until the FDA gets a grip on its practices. So many drugs that should be recalled simply don’t, and there is just no understanding of why. That is why I like to keep up with all of the Latest Drug Recall news.  Keeping up with all of the latest drug recall information can be difficult, but if you are interested in getting all of the latest news about drug recalls like I do, you can spend hours hunting down all of that data on the internet or you can do what I did and check out drugrecalls.com.
