Deaf Women Require Equal Rights During Pregnancy

The members’ most especially pregnant members of the Ghana National Association of Deaf (GNAD) are asking for equal treatment when they visit health facilities for care during or before child birth. According to the hearing impaired women in the Northern Region, they are not able to exchange a few words and their challenges with health workers during the pregnancy period, so it make service delivery difficult for them.

For that reason, as a matter of urgency they called on government to train health workers and place them in at least every health facility to improve effective health delivery. This was revealed when Ghana National Association of Deaf (GNAD), in collaboration with Safe Abortion Action Fund (SAAF), organized 3 day awareness training in Tamale.

The training formed part of a series of interventions which carried out by Ghana National Association of Deaf (GNAD) to address the issue of knowledge and awareness gaps regarding Sexual Reproductive Health among the deaf in Tamale and Savelugu Municipality. Juventus Duorinaah, the Executive Director of GNAD, told the media that the hearing impaired people have all the individuality which exhibited by non-deaf people or normal people, including being sexually active.

Mr. Juventus Duorinaah added that the basic goal of GNAD as captured in the 5 year strategic plan is to make sure that every deaf person has access to excellence information and services on their sexual reproductive health rights. He pointed out that even though the young person Health Service Policy & Strategy (2016-2020) comprehensive policy document holds promises for the prospect of young person sexual reproductive health in Ghana, the document does not have any provisions for deaf young people.
