Panjab University Chandigarh Slipped from Rank 4th to 9th in India

Panjab University Chandigarh has been ranked at 9th in India in Leiden University Rankings 2017. IIT Delhi has topped the rankings followed by IIT Roorkee and then Annamalai University. The Post Graduation Institute of Medical and Research (PGIMER) Chandigarh has been positioned at 19th and AIIMS at 20th in the list.




The rankings were in the category of proportion of papers among the top 10% most frequently cited papers. These were on the based on citations of research papers from 2012 to 2015 in web of science database for 900 institutions. The citations were counted until the end of 2016 and were compiled by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies at Laiden University, Netherlands. In 2007, the first edition of the rankings came out.

The year 2017 edition ranking Panjab University has 7% of its publications among the 10% of most cited publications whereas the PGIMER has 4.5%. In the year 2016 edition ranking the Panjab University had 7.4% of its publications among the 10% of the most cited publications and PGIMER had 4.4%. If the proportion of the most cited publications is calculated then PU comes at 13th rank with 0.4% of its publications falling under this category. With the same, IIT Roorkee tops in research papers followed by Banaras Hindu University (BHU). Last year, PU was at 13th place under this category. IIT Delhi bagged top position under this category. Panjab University tops the list in 2017 edition.




Panjab University tops in percentage of papers which is 69.1% followed by Jadavpur University 67% and Delhi University 66%. Panjab University was on the top with 68.4% of its publication in collaboration during the year 2016. If the fractional counting is not used then PU tops in India under the categories of proportion of papers in the top 10% and 50% most cited papers.

The Panjab University Chandigarh is ranked at 9th position in top 10% most cited papers and IT tops in research papers published in collaboration.
