Commitment Issues

Commitment Issues

All of us can say that we’ve at least come across one person or more who has confessed to have Commitment or even trust issues. Commitment requires a lot, it requires honesty, mutual trust and consistent communication. Depending on relationship histories, that can be harder for some than others, and also depending on the household you’ve been raised in.

I’m fortunate enough to have parents that are still married and still surprisingly Love each other after 27 years of marriage. It’s not easy, but I know they have struggled and pushed to be together. The song that I think relates to this topic of Commitment Issues would have to be “From Time” off of Drake’s latest album, Nothing Was The Same.

If you haven’t heard of the song, I suggest you watch the video below before proceeding.

I personally love this song, it expresses some things that I feel are very easily overlooked. Jhene Aiko sings the hook stating:

“I love me, I love me enough for the both of us
That’s why you trust me, I know you been through more than most of us
So what are you? What are you, what are you so afraid of?
Darling you, you give but you cannot take love.”

The lyrics seem pretty self explanatory, but with further examination and with the context of the song you realize, that Jhene Aiko is expressing the feelings of a girl. A girl who loves someone despite their fear of commitment, someone who loves themselves whereas the guy may lack. Someone who wants to prove that despite the past relationships, they are willing to do what it takes to give the love that they know “Drake” or another guy deserves to have.

She expresses a confusion that “Drake” doesn’t understand his own personal value and that he shouldn’t allow himself to be scarred by his past.

In summary, Drake’s verses sum up all the factors of his life that have led him to struggle with commitment but the song ends with Jhene Aiko singing the hook and it just reinforces that she is determined to reassure him of his doubts and will remain loving and supportive.
