Hanif Abbasi

Muhammad Hanif Abbasi is a Pakistani businessman and politician. He had been a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from 2002 to 2008 and again from 2008 to 2013. On 21 July 2018, he was convicted and sentenced to life in jail by an anti-narcotic court in an ephedrine quota case. He was also disqualified for life from running for public office. 

Early life and education

He was born on 4 January 1966 in Rawalpindi. He graduated from the Forman Christian College and University of the Punjab.

Political career

Abbasi started his political career as a member of Jamaat-e-Islami but later joined Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N) in 2008. He was first elected as a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from NA-56 (Rawalpindi VII) as a candidate of Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) and defeated Sheikh Rashid Ahmad nephew, Sheikh Rashid Shafiq in the 2002 by-elections. In Pakistani general election, 2008, Abbasi joined the Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N) and was again elected as a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from NA-56 (Rawalpindi VII) on the ticket of Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N) and defeated former Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmad. In Pakistani general election, 2013, he again contested election from NA-56 (Rawalpindi VII) as a candiate of Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N) and was defeated by Imran Khan.

Disqualification

Abbasi owns a pharmaceutical wholesale business which he runs under the company named, Gray Pharmaceutical. In June 2012, the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) filed a case in the Lahore High Court alleging Abbasi and several colleagues of misusing 500 kilograms (1,100 lb) of ephedrine which was bought for making medicine in 2010. On June 11, 2018, Justice Ibadur Rehman Lodhi of the Lahore High Court’s Rawalpindi bench had ordered the judge of the special court to hear the case on a daily basis from July 16 onwards and announce the verdict on 21 July 2018. On 21 July 2018, the Control of Narcotics Substances court handed life imprisonment and ₨ 1 million fine to Abbasi in its verdict. He was taken into custody from the courtroom and was subsequently imprisoned.
