SDCC 2019: ‘Black Widow’ Solo Film Releasing May 2020

Marvel Studios unveiled the future of the MCU in its Comic-Con panel on Saturday, first up in Phase 4, ‘Black Widow’ in May of 2020. (Marvel Studios)

Okay, Marvel fans, take a breath. Marvel Studios’ Comic-Con panel on Saturday nearly gave me a heart attack with its rapid-fire announcements. Thor: Love and Thunder with Natalie Portman as a female Thor, Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings with the REAL Mandarin, Mahershala Ali as BLADE?!?! Okay, now I need to calm down.

During the panel, we also got more details on that Black Widow solo film. Most notably that it will be releasing on May 1st, 2020. Scarlett Johansson will star alongside, David Harbour, Florence Pugh, and Rachel Weisz. That film is currently in production in London so, unfortunately, an official trailer wasn’t released. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige did, however, show off a sizzle reel for the film.

In that reel, there was footage of Johansson’s titular heroine in a pretty bad-ass brawl with Pugh’s character, named Yelena Belova. Also revealed in that reel was the villain of the film. Fans of the character and those who saw that Avengers game footage from Friday should be pretty excited for this one. Taskmaster is confirmed as the villain for Black Widow‘s solo film.

Black Widow will open in theaters on May 1st, 2020.
