Batman prequel Pennyworth has tapped Jack Bannon to play a young version of Alfred Pennyworth before he became the Waynes’ faithful butler. The series also cast Ben Aldrige as a young Thomas Wayne.

Pennyworth will follow Alfred after his time as a British special ops operative in his late 20s. Alfred forms a security company in London and begins working with Thomas Wayne, who is already a billionaire in his 20s. This ‘unlikely partnership’ will be explored and the series will offer insight into the relationship between the men that becomes the foundation of Alfred’s relationship with Bruce Wayne later in life. Alfred will also apparently struggle with his own identity following his actions as a soldier.

Pennyworth was announced back in May, Bruno Heller will serve as showrunner with Danny Cannon executively producing. Both men worked previously on Gotham, another Batman prequel focusing on a young Jim Gordon. It’s unclear if these two shows will be connected or exist in the same universe.

Pennyworth enters production later this month and will premiere on Epix, likely sometime during the 2019-2020 TV season.
