How I Learned to Stop Worrying & Love the Mono Filter
While the mono filter may not look like the most exciting filter to many, I love how converting colored images to mono morphs a picture into something else. It's like looking at a story from a different perspective.
Sometimes the abundance of colors or lack thereof in a photo fails to deliver our desired effect in a shot. The whole composition of the picture may become untidy and incoherent. And this is where, I believe, mono excels at.

There are 256 shades of gray,😶 technically speaking. And when every color is transformed into shades of black and white, we can see the details of a photo better. Oftentimes, it results to a classic, dramatic shot. The interplay of light and shadow highlights and veers towards parts we sometimes fail to notice while viewing pictures in color.
Lastly, I find the mono filter useful for salvaging photos taken with bad lighting. Take for example the above selfie I took with my friends on the bottom center of the collage. It was so color-deficient and grainy in the original but the black and white filter gave it a new life. Sometimes when feeling cheeky, I even re-purpose some 2x2 ID photos in greyscale and use them as social media profile photos. So make sure you smile a bit when having your photo taken and give my silly suggestion a try. 😉
