3rd Place – Hugo (dir. Martin Scorsese)
As far as family films go, this one’s not bad! The “fixing what is broken” theme ties in nicely with Martin Scorsese’s love for Film restoration and paying homage to the silent film pioneers who helped pave the way. The automaton coming to life was simply magical and is something I’ve never seen captured on film before. The 3-D element was there almost as an afterthought, something thrown in to keep the kiddies engaged. Hugo took its time to win me over (the second half is better than the first), much in the same way it took for the character Hugo to be won over by the forgotten film director, Georges Meliés. How appropriate!
