Patient Injuries Cause Operating Table Recalls

Patient Injuries Cause Operating Table Recalls

There have been many reports about the popular Mizuho operating tables. The claim is that the tables suddenly and without warning, tip over and cause patients to move while in the middle of surgery. These incidents have led to a Class I recall of the tables. This is the most serious category for Medical Device Recalls that the FDA can issue.

The announcement for the Mizuho OSI Modular Table Systems recall occurred last month by the maker of the tables, but the FDA decided on November 9 that the threat was great enough to warrant a Class I medical device status. This decision is suggesting that the tables’ defect is more than likely going to cause patients serious injuries and/or death. This recall of the operating table came on the hells of numerous complaints that have been reported that stated the tables were tilting or moving while in the middle of surgery.

The makers of the table have assumed that the complications with the tables are caused by the healthcare professionals who are removing the wrong T-pins, which are used to support the table. However, the FDA is warning that the moving and tilting may not be caused by the pins at all. Back in July 29, Mizuho gave the first warning that the medical devices may be faulty and their solution was that it was operational mistakes that caused them. Mizuho also provided some recommendations for the safe use of the tables, but the FDA now feels that the company is too focused on blaming medical personnel for the problem to have fully identified all of the reasons for the malfunctions.

While the FDA didn’t report just how many injuries had been reported to date, none of those injuries reported so far included any deaths. If you are hoping to get more information about the latest news with medical devices you can easily find all of the information you need in the virtual blizzard that is the internet, however you can spend scouring the net only to find complicated and outdated information. Let me save you some time by pointing out that I found my information on medicaldevicerecall.com.
