‘Just Jack!’ officially reveals ‘Will and Grace’ revival coming soon

The rumors have been swirling over that past several months about the potential for a “Will and Grace” revival. It looks like Leslie Jordan, whom I interviewed for this Ifelicious® blog a few years ago (click here) and had a recurring guest role as the beloved Beverly Leslie in the series, was not to be the official messenger. Although Jordan broke the news in a KPBS radio interview over the 2016 holidays (around 5:40 into the audio of the interview), Debra Messing, who played Grace Adler, quickly and publicly denied Jordan’s declaration. Today, however, I was over the moon to see Sean Hayes, who played Jack McFarland and whose many reinventions included the persona “Just Jack!,” tweet the official revival reveal and link to the promo video, “I am thrilled to confirm that #WillAndGrace is coming back to @NBC for the 2017/18 season for 10 eps.”

“Will and Grace” is one of maybe a handful of classic sitcoms that I can watch over and over…and over like it’s the very first time. I quietly inserted myself as the 5th wheel in the friend quadrangle that was Will, Grace, Jack, and Karen. I enjoy a glimpse back at 90s fashion and pop culture. Whenever I catch Logo airing back-to-back reruns of “Will and Grace,” I happily unplug from my current life and tune in. It’s fun and easy television…maybe a little over-exaggerated at times…but that’s just how sitcoms are. Not to mention, Grace is the first lady of hags in pop culture in my eyes.

“Will and Grace” introduced mainstream viewers to LGBT inclusive programming. In the official press release, NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt stated, “This groundbreaking series for everything from gay rights to social and political commentary — all disguised as a high-speed train of witty pop culture — is coming back where it belongs.” The press release also mentioned that “Will and Grace” co-creators Max Muctchnick and David Kohan will be on-board as showrunners and executive producers. Mutchnick shared, “Dave and I are absolutely thrilled about the opportunity to write what Will, Grace, Jack and Karen are thinking about in 2017.” I am, too! We see hints of modern-day “Will and Grace” in the promo video when Jack references Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s divorce and Rosario (played by Shelley Morrison…oh, how I missed her, too!) references one of Hillary Clinton’s most controversial 2016 presidential campaign quotes when she referred to Trump supporters as a “basket of deplorables.”

So many Gen X television favorites, like “Full House” and “Dawson’s Creek” are seeing a revival or rumored to be having one. Of them, “Will and Grace” is honestly the first one that caught my attention. It’s always a risky move, but I hope the revival will have me fall in love with “Will and Grace” all over again.
