Sleep Deprived Music Review: Fences

Fences

Fences of Seattle released the album, Failure Scriptures, in June. I’ve listened to it several times and it’s not what I expected. When the album appeared on my radar, I thought it was going to be hip-hop or rap. I could not have been more wrong. The music is less pop and more indie – more pianos and guitars and less synthesizers.

This album is not exactly like the stuff that Fences are known for – like the collaborations with Macklemore or Sara Quin of Teagan and Sara.

The lyrics are solid and reflective like his past work. Fences really puts himself out there as far as the lyrics. It’s like listening to someone’s diary. You might even feel a little guilty for listening to music that seems so personal. It’s alright though, we’re allowed to listen.

If I was going on a hike, then I would like this album to be on the playlist for the day. My personal favorite song on the album is “Wooden Dove.”

Don’t forget to check out the “Paper Route” video.
