The Accidental Prime Minister Review And First Day Expectations

Cast: Anupam Kher, Akshaye Khanna, Vipin Sharma, Suzanne Bernert, Munish Bhardwaj, Arjun Mathur, Aahana Kumra

Director: Vijay Ratnakar Gutte

Story

Directed by Vijay Ratnakar Gutte, The Accidental Prime Minister promised to make right the image of a fallen man who was wronged in every way possible. Based on a book of the same name, written by Sanjaya Baru (Manmohan Singh’s media advisor,) the films traces all the events which took place during the ten years of Manmohan Singh’s reign. From talking about the Nuclear Deal, to the 2G and 3G scams, The Accidental Prime Minister presents a contrived tale.

Review

From the time the film starts, one immediately realises the story is told from the point of view of the author. Through the entire movie, there is a clear indication of how Manmohan Singh was but a mere puppet in the hands of the Nehru Gandhi family and how he had no real power while making any of the major decisions during his tenure as the Prime Minister of India.

For a film which promised complete insight into what really happened during the “political turf war,” the final story does nothing more than just scratch the surface a little. Despite Akshaye Khanna doing a passable job of playing Baru and Suzanne Bernert being quite a convincing Sonia Gandhi, it was quite disappointing to watch Anupam Kher reduce the former Prime Minister to nothing more than a caricature.

On the whole, despite promising a lot more content than the book had to offer, The Accidental Prime Minister seems to be nothing more than a contrived effort of making the Congress party look bad. As a director, Gutte went above and beyond to prove how Singh was betrayed by his Party. However, while doing so, he simply seems to miss mentioning the other major details which happened during the former Prime Minister’s reign.

From skimming over the nuclear deal between India and the U.S., to the various scams between 2004 and 2014 which led to the downfall of the Congress party, The Accidental Prime Minister is a badly made movie.
