    Amitabh Bachchan's Family

    Harivansh Rai Bachchan (Father) - He was a very well known poet of his time, born on 27th November 1907 & died on 18th January 2003 (aged 95). Although he was a very well known Hindi poet, he was the first Indian to do Ph.D. in English literature from Cambridge University, England.

    Some of his finest Hindi poems are Madhushala, Agnipath, Himmat Karne Walon Ki Haar Nahi Hoti.

    His first wife was Shyama whom he married in 1926 but she died in 1936 because of TB (Tuberculosis). Then, he married Teji Bachchan in 1941 and they both have two sons Amitabh Bachchan & Ajitabh Bachchan.

    Teji Bachchan (Mother) - Apart from being the wife of Harivansh Rai Bachchan, she was a social activist and shared a close relationship with the Gandhi family. She was born on 12th August 1914 and died on 21st December 2007.

    Ajitabh Bachchan (Younger Brother) - Born on 18th May 1947 (70 years in 2018), Ajitabh is 4 years younger than Amitabh. He stayed in London for most of his life and was a very successful businessman. He shifted to Amitabh's house Prateeksha a few years ago.

    Jaya Bachchan (Wife) - Amitabh & Jaya got married on 3rd June 1973. They are married for 45 years now (as in 2018). She was born on 9th April 1948 and she is 70 years old (as in 2018).     Childhood & College Days (life history)
    Amitabh Bachchan was born in Allahabad, United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh), British India on 11th October 1942 at 3:00 pm.

    He was first named Inquilaab Srivastava but his father's friend Sumitranandan Pant told his father that "He has a glowing face and he should be named Amit or Amitabh" which is a Bengali name. Then his father changed his name.

    The meaning of the name Amitabh is 'Brilliance Unlimited'. His nickname at home was Munna.
    His father Harivansh Rai Bachchan was a poet who is still remembered for his remarkable work in poetry (he died in 2003) and his mother Teji Bachchan was a housewife who always kept herself away from the limelight (she died in 2007). His mother always wanted him to be a performer.

    From his childhood days, Amitabh was very much influenced by his father and the poetic atmosphere in the house must have clicked the artist within him.

    He also has a younger brother named Ajitabh Bachchan who is four years younger than him. He used to call him 'Bunty' his nickname and he still calls him by this name. 

    He was very naughty as a child but also a 'Agyakaari' (obedient) child. "Once when his father was outside of the town, his mother got ill and he stayed awake all night to take care of her".

    He was always afraid of bulls as he was once injured by one.

    His first school was St. Mary Convent School which was changed to all girls school when he was in fourth grade.

    He was then admitted to Sherwood College, Nanital which was a boarding school where he was bullied by the senior students.

    Sherwood is also the first school where he started acting in plays and kept doing it until it got serious.

    After completing school, he went to Kirori Mal College, Delhi University where he completed his post-graduation double Master of Arts (Double MA).

    His room number 65 in the hostel of KM Collge is still very popular among students and everyone calls it "Amit Ji Ka Kamra". Kulbhushan Kharbanda the famous actor was his roommate. 

    Beautiful Fact: In 2017, Bachchan went to his college and donated Rs 51 Lakhs for the renovation of the auditorium where he used to learn his acting skills.

    Acting Career (Including Blockbuster Movies)
    Amitabh made his debut as an actor in movies with Saat Hindustani (Amitabh Bachchan first movie) in 1969 which is the only black and white movie he did in his life. He won the National Film Award for this movie for the most promising newcomer.

    He showed his finest acting skills in the movie which is why he is still working in Hindi Film Industry.

    His actual debut in films was as a voiceover artist in the 1969 Hindi film Bhuvam Shome. He was the narrator of the story.

    1971 film Anand became the turning point in his career where he shared the screen with the first superstar of Indian cinema Rajesh Khanna. He got his first Filmfare award for the best supporting actor for this film. This flick is still considered as one of the all-time classic.

    Then he made a guest appearance in Jaya Bhadhuri starer Guddi. He also stared in S.Ramanathan's film Bombay To Goa. Both these films were moderately successful

    He also narrated the part of Rajesh Khanna & Jaya Bhaduri's Bawarchi.

    He gave 12 flop films before he was recognized by the writer Salim Khan who offered him the lead role in Zanjeer in 1973. The movie became the money spinner at the box office and gave him the title of "The Angry Young Man".

    In the same year, he did Saudagar, his most underrated film, where he played the role of a Patali Gur trader who has a strong ambition to marry a girl. It's a must watch for his fans.

    Again, in the same year came Amitabh & Rajesh Khanna's film Namak Haram. It is the film where he is the supporting actor and he took all the limelight and won the award of Filmfare's Best Supporting Actor.

    After a few not so memorable movies like Kasauti, Benaam, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan etc. came his movie Deewar (1975) with Shashi Kapoor which became a hit and it also had some iconic dialogues which are still remembered.

    In the same year, he did Sholay which became a blockbuster. It is still considered by many as one of the best film ever made in Hindi Film Industry. Every character associated with this movie is iconic.

    He did a small role in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Chupke Chupke which was a semi-hit at that time but later on, this flick became one of the best comedy movie ever made in India.

    After that, he did movies like Kabhie Kabhie, Hera Pheri etc. which were good films but didn't take his career further. In 1977, he signed Manmohan Desai's Amar Akbar Anthony, he got the Filmfare's Best Actor Award for this movie.

    In 1978 Don, he played the double role and it is one of the best movies of the Mahanayak. Some people say that it was quite ahead of it's time and was completely different from the movies that were being made at that time. He also won the Filmfare Best Actor Award for this awesome film.
    His Mr. Natwarlal and Kaala Pathar released in 1979 became hit movies.

    His 1980 films Dostana and Shaan were also successful at the box office.

    After giving successful films like Lawaaris, Satte Pe Satta, Namak Halal in the years 1981 & 1982.

    He did Coolie in 1983 while shooting the film in 1982 he met with an accident during a fight scene and also underwent a surgery. The whole nation prayed for his wellness and he recovered well. This movie also became a super hit.

    After a gap of a few years when he deliberately took a break from the movies. He signed Mard as his comeback film which became a superhit movie.

    Shahenshah released in 1988 became a superhit movie and this also gave him the name Shahenshah of Bollywood.

    He appeared in Agneepath in 1990 which became a superhit and some of its dialogues were also remembered to this day. He won the National Film Award for the Best Actor for this movie.

    Khuda Gawah released in 1992 which was an average film at the box office, he decided to take a break from the movies.

    In 1996, he thought of running his own production company Amitabh Bachchan Corporation, Ltd. (ABCL). Almost all the movies made under this banner flopped resulting in 90 Crore loan and the Bachchan got bankrupt.

    In 1998, he made a comeback with Bade Miyan Chote Miyan with Govinda and this movie became a hit. Sooryavansham in 1999 was also a hit but few of his movies flopped in quick succession.

    In 2000, he went to his office and thought about what he can do best. He realized that acting is the only thing he knew and then he went to Yash Chopra's office for a role and got Mohabbatein. This movie became a blockbuster and he got the Filmfare award for Best Supporting Actor.

    Mohabbatein and Kaun Banega Crorepati (TV show) revived his career and movies like Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love, Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Ghum and Baghban proved to be a hit at the box office.

    In 2005, he did Black where his performance of a teacher of a deaf-blind girl was loved by the audiences as well as the critics. For this movie, he won the National award for Best Actor also the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.

    In the years 2005 & 2006 Bunty Aur Babli, Sarkar, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna became hits at the box office. All these movies also had his son Abhishek Bachchan in it.

    At the same time Paheli, Viruddh... Family Comes First, Dil Jo Bhi Kahey.. flopped at the box office but he was never criticized for his acting skills.

    In 2007, he appeared in 8 films some of them became hit and some of them flopped at the box office.

    Bhootnath in 2008 became a hit where he played the role of a ghost. He was also seen in Sarkar Raj in 2008 which did average business.

    He produced Paa in 2009 with R.Balki as director, where he suffered from a rare disease called Progeria, a genetic disorder which causes children to age quicker than normal. He won the hearts everywhere with his performance. He also won the National award for Best Actor and also the Filmfare award for Best Actor.

    In 2011 he played the lead role in Bbuddah... Hoga Terra Baap, he was also the producer of this movie. The film average business at the box office.

    In 2013, he did his first International film The Great Gatsby, he only did a special appearance in this flick.

    In the same year, he did his first animated movie Mahabharat where he gave his voice to Bhishma.

    2015's Shamitabh where he was also the producer did well at the box office.

    Piku released in 2015, also did good business at the box office. He was also awarded with National Award for Best Actor and also won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor for his wonderful performance of an elderly father.

    Television Career
    Kaun Banega Crorepati (As Host)In the year 2000, he entered into TV hosting Kaun Banega Crorepati show on Star Plus giving the winner 1 Crore rupees, the Indian version of British show Who Wants to be a Millionaire. The show became a rage in the country. The season ended in 2001.

    The second season came in 2005 by the changed name Kaun Banega Crorepati Dwitiya where the amount was doubled to 2 Crores rupees. It was again hosted by the AB Sir but this time he became ill during the filming of the show shooting only 61 episodes out of 85.

    The third season was given to Shahrukh Khan which started in January 2007 and ended in April 2007. It ended shortly then expected because of the decline in the viewers.

    The fourth season came in 2010 again with Big B as host and it was named KBC 4. This time the channel was Sony TV and the winning prize was 5 Crore rupees. 

    The fifth and sixth seasons were also hosted by the Mahanayak with the same winning amount of 5 Crore rupees.

    In the 7th season of KBC which was again hosted by Amitabh, the winning amount was raised from 5 Crore to 7 Crores.

    The 8th and 9th seasons were also hosted by the Bachchan with the same winning amount of 7 Crore rupees.

    The tenth season will start from August 2018 with Amit Ji as host.

    There is a buzz that he will be charging around 2.75-3 Crores per episode for this season.

    Yudh (Fiction TV Series)
    Amitabh made his acting debut on TV with a show called Yudh directed by Ribhu Dasgupta. The show was aired for only 20 episodes and it was replaced by Indian Idol because of the poor response from the viewers.
